Introduction and Request for Newbie Advice - What do you wish you knew?

Hi Everyone,

I just recently started reading the warrior forum and thought I would briefly introduce myself and seek some advice from those who were in my shoes not too long ago. I graduated from college a couple years ago and took on a corporate job in litigation consulting but have since left that and have been doing a little searching ever since. My brother, who's been involved in IM for a couple years now, introduced me to the warrior forum and inspired me to learn more.

I'm very intrigued and inspired by the warrior forum community and the dedication and hard work exhibited by so many of you. To be completely honest, I've personally often sought the "short cut" approach to achieving things rather than full on hard work and persistence. I guess over time I'll have to balance working hard with working smart while ensuring that I don't lose my resolve.

So with that said, I'd like to ask everyone what they wish they knew when they started out and to solicit any actionable advice you guys may have. I love learning and sharing knowledge and am really looking forward to your responses.

      Hmmm, what I wish I knew....that it is important to just focus on ONE whatever we are doing. =)

      And feel free to ask questions. It is the right attitude to learn and propel forward.

        What John said about focus was my first thought, but thinking back, I wish I'd realised sooner that when I assume "I can't do that", if I ask myself "Why not?" and really consider the question instead of just dismissing the idea, I can usually remove the obstacle - often surprisingly quickly.

        In short, I wish I'd had more faith in myself sooner and realised that not knowing how to do a thing can be cured simply by getting my head down and finding out how.

          It is never too late to change our mindset.

          And I applaud to you for the infact you are aware of focusing on ONE is the right thing to do.

          Again, I made this mistake too, dabbling on whatever things I can grab hold on and I think I can make money (as "promised" by the sales page) LOL

          Anyway, we got to learn and share our experience so others wont make the same mistake as us.

          Haha... I've spoken to him couple of times... very nice and smart guy!

          Anyways, to answer your question, I wish I mastered Adwords earlier

          Actually, there's only 1 skill worthy of mastering in IM - learning how to drive targetted traffic to your site.

          Your copy and marketing can be crappy, but if you know how to channel enough targetted traffic to it, you'll still see results in the form of sales and conversion... though they may be dismal...

            John and astracadia, really good points. I've often found myself trying to do too much at once without much focus and coming out of it all empty handed.

            Johnson, what's helped you master adwords along the way?

                My advice would be to not try and learn EVERYTHING at once.

                There are multiply steps that you need to take and it is better if you focus on completing each step successful before you move onto the next one.

                Information overload is a massive problem in the IM world so the best way to avoid it is to focus on what thing then move onto the next that way you wont get overwhelmed and won't fail.

                Also there are a lot of things that are kinda useless and a waste of time so to save you time just take it one step at a time

                  So much to learn and you want to learn it all at once
                  but that is just asking for overload.

                  Then the next most important thing is to start making
                  good contacts early. No-ons does or can do this stuff alone.
                  Good partners and friends in the business will help you
                  to learn, develop and stretch your business.

                  There are many more points I'd love to share but following
                  rule #1, I'll let you go at it at your own pace

    IMO, more important than anything is building trusting relationships, and along the way...

    ... Believe maybe a third of what you read and maybe half of what you hear until you find those people who are actually trustworthy, honest, ethical, and whose main tenents are morals, character, and honor in their personal and business life...

    And put your credit card away until you find this select few people who will always put your best interests first [instead of their own bank account.]

      It seems that Adwords is where everyone recommends starting out with/mastering. I've already learned quite a bit about adwords, but was interested in seeing what resources you guys would recommend or found most useful?

        One thing I have learned that helps me is to keep whatever you are doing down to these two simple components:

        1. Master one single method of traffic generation.
        2. Master one method of sales conversion that is profitable.

        It took me a long time to see that these two pieces are the only vital pieces to the puzzle.

        Drive traffic and convert it.

          I wish I had learned how to use adwords. When I started out I jumped straight in to ppc advertising without any know-how and lost about $600 within 2 weeks with no sales whatsoever lol. not good.

            Hi Ahmed,

            Aside from doing your homework and your due diligence, I would cite focus as the one thing I wish I had when I started out. There really is so much stuff out there that you just have got to decide what you want to do, get yourself a game plan and go do it.

            Another thing I would like to add is to aim high. When I started I was looking to make some pocket change first and then see what happens - and found myself attracted to offers and ideas that made pocket change and wasted a lot of time there. I knew how to make good money but was too busy clicking links for $0.005 that I did not take any action.

            Now I have set myself a target of making a fulltime income from IM and I have started to take the necessary actions towards that goal.

            Think about it. If you aim for $100 and you succeed, you get $100. If you aim for $10,000 and you fail, you may still get $5,000.
