Tracking and testing????

I know a lot of you do testing and research to figure out your numbers. Please don't laugh as I am new to internet marketing but I just want to know if there is a good resource or ebook or something that can give me a good overview of doing testing, what to expect, how to do it, general principles, etc.. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

This is kind of a loaded question but really, I believe that you need to track and test EVERYTHING. Place trackers on your links, track the clicks within your sites, pages, subdomains, etc.

Tracking and testing are just a basic part of the business and you need to be on top of every aspect that you can be. Hope that helps...if you have questions, please PM me and I'd be glad to help as much as possible.

    Sincerely,

    Hi, Mark.

There are a number of options but the basic idea (for me) is to test and track everything I possibly can. You want to know what is working for you and what is not.

I track and test my Email Marketing Open Rates, Click-Throughs, Headlines, Ad copy, etc...

A good way to start, if you have your own web site is by using Google Analytics.

If you are conducting Email Marketing with any of the major autoresponder companies, the ability to track your open rates and click-throughs should be available as part of their system.

Recently, I ran a test. I sent two messages out to my list 1 to 1/2 of the list and the other to the other 1/2 of the list.

The only difference between the two was the subject line. I wanted to know which subject line would capture more attention. In my case, the results were so close, it didn't seem to matter.

My next test will be the Call To Action line in my email message.

    Two messages.
    Identical headlines/subject lines.
identical ad copy EXCEPT for the Call To Action.

Hopefully, that will give you a basic idea of how to use tracking and testing.

If you are using PPC, you MUST use tracking to quickly determine which keywords are converting.

Here's an article I wrote about setting it up:
