In yo FACE, Sean Mcalister/IM Reporter!!!

Ahem. That was immature of me.

I don't take it back though.

(Okay, I'm 99 out of 100. Let me bask in reflected glory, will ya?)

You were 81 earlier in the day. I guess you haven't tweeted enough today. ;-)

I think at one point you may have been in the top 50. The Twitter Elite have really been bouncing around a lot today.

In that case, I best not tell you that you might have been in the Top 25 too.

I don't remember for sure. I didn't take screenshots of your rankings.

Yeah, your little "spoofed" location page because you couldn't make it onto the genuine list.

I think I found the problem. We were both doing well until we started tweeting with Sean McAlister today. Then we took nosedives...

I don't think Twitter.Grader likes it when we tweet with those users that are on spoofed location pages.

    Congratulations, Dana!

Being someone who has never even visited Twitter.com...

Is there a benefit to being in the top? Does it matter? And, if so, how do you get there?

Come over to the Twit side, Michael! mua ha ha ha ha....

I honestly don't know if there's a benefit to being in the top 100. And I have NO idea how I got there - but I do tweet a lot.

      Stop snickering, everyone.

Yes, I tweet. And I'm not ashamed.

            LOL

That is so awesome. Shows how much the Twit side has not attracted me yet. But if there were benefits to it, I would consider being a Twit that tweets (if that's the right way to say it).

One? There are a bunch of them in there.

          Dan Rinnert is #32.
          Jim Turner is #57.
          Scott Stratten is #59.
          Chris Garrett is #85.

Those jumped out at me. Didn't see Dana when I looked, and there are a bunch of other people there who I'm pretty sure are Warriors.

JT... #1 in Scotland? I could probably get to #1 in Erie, PA if I wanted. Isn't that about the same thing?

I did hit #10 at one point during the day. I'm thinking that maybe the higher you get, the more you bounce around. I would guess that because of how things change fast on Twitter, it might make perfect sense that the numbers are going to continually bounce around.

Michael, I get totally awesome press release clients from Twitter all the time. I got three last week. When I was doing mostly ghostwriting, I got ghostwriting clients from there. PM me, I'll give you some tips.

To a degree, yes. Twitter.Grader is largely a matter of bragging rights. I mean, sometimes you can look at it and some of the rankings just don't make any sense. There was one day where I was knocked out of the #1 spot (in Ohio) by someone with fewer followers, fewer tweets and fewer everything. I couldn't see any reason why they'd be ahead of me. But, such situations like that usually resolve themselvees. And, I think that Twitter.Grader constantly adjusts its algo.

If you check your position periodically throughout the day, it will drive you batty if you take it too seriously. Today, I was at #10, I was at #25. Sometimes I was in the teens, or the thirties. It just changes like that. Last week, I was buried somewhere on page 3.

But, to return to the question, yes, there is a benefit. It does give you some visibility and it helps you get some additional followers without you needing to go out and find them. They find you.

It's like anything else, the more popular you get, the even more popular you can become. It becomes a snowball. When I had a small following, it might have taken me a couple weeks to get the number of new followers that I can get now in a day. I just got four new followers while typing this post.

And, followers means traffic. I know that many people don't see the point to Twitter, but it can really help to drive traffic to your site. I joined Twitter in July and didn't really start using it heavily until maybe late August or September. But, when I looked at my traffic to my site for 2008, Twitter was my third largest source of traffic. And I was only on Twitter for essentially four months.

So, you know, tell your competitors that Twitter is useless and just for people to chit-chat about nothing all day long.

Although to be honest I don't really like Twitter Grader's algorithm... its biased towards people who don't follow others (in another words, you are a "Twitter Snob" as Perry Belcher calls it) and those who tweet A LOT.
