    Google's keyword tool only has basic keyword research features. Software usually gets more or less the same keywords, but they automate the process of checking how competitive keywords are.

    For instance, using Google it's impossible to find how many backlinks a page or domain has. You need to use other tools to check for these. Also the pagerank, the number of matches, the on page optimization are all factors that would take forever to check manually. Keyword research tools do all of things after pushing just a few buttons.

    If you use the Google keyword tool you get the data directly from the horses' mouth; if you use a 3rd party software you have 2 "advantages":

    1. you can pay for it
    2. the results are "enhanced" with data that is not reliable.

    So, if you have too much money and do not need good results: go ahead and use some software; otherwise you can as well use the Google data.
