Questions about Split Testing!

Hello Warriors,

I need your help in clarifying these things.

How did you do your split testing? Did you just create another subdirectory or get another domain?

We need to test and see which one works better.

The original site's homepage has a video and a facebook apps call to action image on the sidebar.

The other site should have a text on the homepage and an optin form on the sidebar.

Another thing, some contents might be similar, are we going to face duplicate contents issues for this even if we own the 2 sites?

Have you tried using the google optimizer too?

Please give me some advices and tips.

Any information you may provide will be highly appreciated.

  I am still studying the Google Optimizer. I think we don't need to buy another domain to evade duplicate content issues.

  Or you can buy 1 domain, and test on 2 different subdomains on the domain.
  
  But do that only if you're sure that your traffic won't be organic.

Dude, youd be absolutely crazy not to split test using Googles Website Optimizer.

Its so easy to use. Its free, and its very comprehensive.

This tied in with Google Analytics should give you absolutely everything you need.

Ive spent the last few days with both and am learning heaps.

PS. I would strongly recommend AGAINST setting up multiple domains as a means to split test.
You could potentially be setting yourself up for duplicate penalty infringements from the search engines. Not to mention also, the messing about involved and unecessary costs.

We have decided to have 2 subdirectories:

www.domain.com/test1.html

www.domain.com/test2.html

Is it okay if we'll use the same headline for these pages?

Theyre not subdirectories, theyre just pages.

Use the same meta tags for both, just change up the content. You should be testing user behaviour, not SEO.

Again, do this on ONE site, dont use multiple domains.

Also, be sure to set and monitor your goals within Analytics (use funnels if you need to) so you know whats going on.
