amazon niche research?

i'm researching some niches on amazon. is there a standard number i want to look for in the Amazon Best Sellers Rank? What number should it be below to make sense as a possible niche market? for example, the top book in one of the niches i'm thinking of is 2,000,000. that seems pretty high. any thoughts? thanks! p.s. one of the books in the list is 97,000 but it's only 99 cents.

Not sure which part of your research you are referring are you talking about monthly searches using the Google Keyword tool or competing pages on Google search ??

If you are using Googles Keyword tool be sure you have the EXACT box checked and the BROAD box unchecked for accurate monthly search results.

If you can clarify that we can advise better.

Sorry misread your post and after rereading see your referring to Amazons Best sellers rank and to tell you the truth its really does not play much role in my research, its there just to give you a rough idea of what is selling well on Amazon in each category and overall rough idea of how well a product has sold on Amazon for that product.

i thought i read something once about looking up books when doing niche research and seeing how they rank on amazon best seller ranking. and if they rank below at a certain number (like 100,000 or better for example) then it would be a good niche to get in to.

I initially read that to mean that this was a method suggested for finding products on Amazon around which you could build an Amazon site but in re-reading this, I think you mean that this was a method for finding new niche ideas in general - not necessarily physical product niches. Right?

This method might have some merit as a way of finding niche ideas but I would never use that one piece of information alone as the determining factor about whether to enter a niche or not. The lower number of books on a topic could just as much indicate lack of interest in the niche as anything else, I would think.
