When Did You Know That IM Was For You? When Did The Penny Drop?

Hey guys,

Just thought I would write this post because everything is relative and sometimes I forget that I come from a marketing background and this translates well to what IM is all about.

For me sitting in a 9 to 5 sales office and lining someone else's pockets FORCED me to start looking into other ways of making money.

I went through the Ebay route and had small successes until I realized that the people making the REAL money on Ebay were doing affiliate marketing.

From there I went out into the big wide world of Google and Affiliate marketing, Clickbank etc...

Once I got my first sale of $17.23 I knew this was for me!

I was over the moon - you would of thought I won the lottery!

How did it all come together for you and when did the penny drop and you KNEW that IM was for you?

All the best,

Chris Jones

    Chris,

I used to have my own offline business and after 8 years it crashed and burnt (taking me with it). I had to go and get a job. I promised myself that as soon as possible, I would work for myself again. Internet Marketing is the way to go because if (when) I get it right, I will be able to stay at home and be there for the kids in the afternoon and NEVER be financially dependent on anyone else again.

So it might take another year or so before I get there, but all the sacrifice I am currently undergoing will pay off and I will be free

      Hey Di,

      That MUST have been rough!

I can't remember the last time someone told me I couldn't get a coffee! :p

Still I think you have advantages having ran your own offline business and think you will get there - I remember seeing your business plan and it looked solid to me...

Keep going, don't give up and get to where you want to be!

It must've been when I made my first CB sale.

Granted it was with a system that I don't think is the best (mainly uses Squidoo instead of your own site), but yeah- definitely the first few bucks!

Cool thread! I'm still waiting for my eureka moment, haha. But my monthly revenue keeps going up (automatically, which is awesome). I'm hoping to get to $500/month by the end of the year. THEN I'll know it's for me!

Snap! I did much the same thing - had a lot of success with Bum Marketing - those were the days huh?

You could live off writing Ezine articles and getting ranked fast.

Now you need to put a bit of thought into it!

Yep, the gaming niche is awesome!

Got a lot more competitive since 2003 though lol.

I was working 10, 12 hour days some years ago in a direct marketing company. Money wasn't that bad and I was learning new stuff every day. I was working as a copywriter and later marketing manager on large, multichannel projects. DRTV, web, call center etc. So, in a way I'm involved in internet marketing since I started my first job.

But when I started my first project (Sales page with physical product) I knew this is it.

    1. There was the money. I made some Adwords ads and set a low daily budget. I expected to get some response, but the site was a major success (for that time, at least). I made something like 500 euros in my first day with 8% conversion rate in sales. I didn't make that much every day, but I still probably made more money than CEO. I quit my job in a week

    2. There was the thrill. I was never a materialist. Some money is nice, but the thrill of refreshing inbox and seeing a few new orders every 30 minutes is just priceless.

Now I own a business specialized in selling physical products via simple but very effective sales pages (mini sites, product pages, call it what you like ) I work because its fun, I can play with my daughter when I want to, I always have time for my wife etc.

I just can't understand why everyone is not in IM

Awesome, I think you hit a really good point when you say "there was the thrill" I have always been into Poker and it amazes me that these guys can bet $50,000 a hand and just talk crap with each other like it is a few bucks.

It got me thinking "I wonder what it is like to gamble for a living?" - well IM is not gambling at least it shouldn't be.... but the thrill is there for sure!

I agree with you - don't know why everyone doesn't do this!

However there are downsides - you have to be able to motivate yourself, work alone, go through the bad times etc...

The good outweighs the bad though big time!

Thats true. About an hour ago I started to work on my new sales copy. But I found warrior forum instead and now Im writing this instead of working

But there are some "tips" on how you can motivate yourself.

    1. Team up with someone. I don't think I could grow my business alone. If you have someone to work with he will "poke" you when you are lazy and you will do the same to him/her.

    2. I always keep little "reminders" in my home office. For instance, I had small bills from every country I was working with taped to my wall. I always keep a picture of my next "dream" car and work hard, until I have the money to buy it etc.

    3. Get a kid My productivity went through the roof since I have another living being who depends on me

Funny thing is....I remember my first clickbank sale a few years ago. It was worth like $20 I think. I was like "oh this actually works."

Then the battle was no longer uphill.

But the moment I KNEW this is what I wanted to do, was when I was 19 and I started following Dennis Karganilla. I saw the lifestyle I wanted, and I saw that it was POSSIBLE.

He was just a regular guy from California. So I said to myself "I could do that" and that was all she wrote. Full steam ahead!!

        Yep agreed!

Incredible place for your business and also a place to make some good friends as well as colleagues/JV partners.

        Yep, have been there....

Hardest thing is to take focused action and keep on doing it - eventually it becomes habit and you look around and think look at all my stuff!

        This is very important.

Everyone needs a role model I think.

Mine is Felix Dennis - one of the U.K richest entrepreneurs.

Even set up limited and called myself CLJ Publishing at long last which I believe is quite close to the name he called himself.

Let's hope I do as well...

I KNEW I'd made the right decision the first time I woke up in the morning and saw over $1500 in overnight sales. That convinced me 100% this stuff works.

Everything up until that point was pure faith, living off Adsense earnings worried it would end at any moment.

      Yes I should say so!

      Awesome stuff!

It is funny though that worried it would all be over at any moment used to drive me quite a lot.

Now I focus on what I DO want rather than the other way around.

Even when I started making good money "the fear" was there - also funny to think that when I let go of that I did EVEN better!

For me, it was when I realized that all the crap they feed you about going to college and getting a degree is the way to success. That's a lie. The way to make real money is by finding your passion, learning how to turn it into money, and working your butt off (a byproduct of finding your passion).

When I discovered affiliate marketing I knew it was the ticket. I had been doing SEO for my offline business ignoring IM thinking websites made squat from Adsense and selling banner ads. Then I found out about affiliate marketing (and later lists) and the light switched on and I was sold from that day forward.

I couldn't say that IM was for me, since I am still a part-timer in the IM business for five years already. I still have my daytime job as a university faculty and I do have planned to go full-time with online activity. In fact, I am on the process of that transition from being full-time with my daytime job and part-time in the IM business, to full-time IM boss and if possible, part-time in my daytime job as a lecturer. I really do enjoy my job and what I have been doing in the IM business.
Although I am still doing some part-time in the IM business, it really helped me pay my bills and have some extra cash to spend on things that I was planning to buy since I was a child, and some extra cash to be saved for my family.
But nevertheless, I now have this feeling that IM was now slowly making its way to me and me, making my way into the IM. I always believe that it takes two to do Tango, so if someone will tell me that IM is making its way on me, I always respond that I also made my way to the IM business.
It all started when I received my very first payment in the IM business, not much, but still a payment given to me by my first employer. And since then, I always try to improve myself as an article writer, researcher to really provide employers the services that they require from me.
Thanks for starting this thread Chris. This will totally brings us back to memory lanes.

It was a combination of things, but one of the biggests influences that got me started was an affiliate marketer named Frank Garon. When I saw with my own eyes how much passive income he made from just sending out a useful broadcast to his list, I knew this is something I had to learn more about.

A long long time ago (in a far distant galaxy) . . sorry.

About 4 years ago I explored the world of IM, and I thought then that this could be a viable way to be in control of your own destiny.

I've been self empltoed for many moons, so I already have the attitude that 'you never get rich working for someone else'. However, my spouse totally opposed the idea, and I bowed to my superior, and spent the next 3 years scraping a menial income in other ways.

Then she went. Well actually, she took the house, and I went .
Apparently I "wasn't bringing in enough money to the home".

So - 12 months ago, I decided to change my life, and with no opposition, took some serious steps into the world of IM, starting with virtually zero knowledge, and a similar budget.

It's taken time, but I am now making financial progress (income), which has motivated me to keep going.

When will I decide I'm successful?
When I can take my three little girls across the Atlantic to DisneyWorld, without worrying about the money.
When I can put enough away for their University years
When I can be sure that they're financially secure
When I can start to teach them how I make a living, so that they can
I don't trust the government, the economy and employers to keep a roof over my head. My trust is in me.

See you in Florida - soon.

      Cheers
      Alan
