With the release of 2 big products Niche Blueprint and NicheQ many internet marketers are talking about niche selection. The reality is that there are many different ways to go through the process of selecting a niche.
The process you use should depend on how you plan on selling the products or services. I research for a review site much different than for choosing a niche to create a hot product in. Also how you promote your site will effect niche selection.
The great thing about niche research is that it can be done effectively completely free if you know where to look.
If you plan on getting search engine traffic then you must select a niche that has profitable low competition keywords. Profitability is the most important aspect in selecting a niche if nobody else is making money in it why would you?
Look for competition; find out what's hot or what people have a passion for. If you can understand your potential customers and where they hang out then you will be able to sell to them much easier.
