Asked to put on a seminar!!!

A few days ago I emailed a local radio station about advertising. I was interested in starting radio advertising and asked them how much it costs per ad. She emailed me back the next day, said she looked at my website and she wanted to speak in person. I just got back from that meeting.

She (manager of two radio stations) asked me to put on a series of seminars teaching local businesses about online marketing. In exchange they're going to give me FREE radio advertising, plus I can do a sales pitch at the end of the seminars.

I've never done any public speaking but I'm so excited! What an easy way to get local clients!

By the way, I didn't do anything special. Just have a portfolio site up. Just shows how great things can come out of no where.

    Well, thats good news.

I do a lot of local seminars, and workshops myself, and i bet you will love the experience the live interaction provides. It definitely is much cooler doing live shows

    :-)

    Have fun.

    Congratulations Dan.

This sounds like a great foot in the door to becoming a local Internet small business authority.

I would suggest you take the time to "milk" this for all it's worth. By that, I mean be sure to do things like:

1- Send out a press release or two (from your business) about your upcoming seminars

2- Claim yourself as a radio personality on top of your web expertise

3- Record the sessions (or make arrangements with the radio station) so you can use the material later - sell or give away) if your contract allows

4- Take some pictures of you doing the recording sessions so you can use those in promoting yourself in the future

5- Whatever else you can think of to increase your visibility as a local celebrity

    Good luck,

    Steve

    Thanks guys!

I'll do all of that Steve, great advice. Not only will I be interviewed over the radio station but the actual seminars will be in person, so I'm going to set up my video camera and have someone record them. That will look great on my website

Definitely a great foot in the door in the local market. Still can't believe it...lol I'm excited.

By the way, I have some ideas about what to talk about but if anyone has any suggestions fire away! The seminars are for local business owners and I'm supposed to talk about online marketing and social media.

    Hey Dan -
    I am a professional presentation coach -
SO i thought i would give you a heads up on what somoe of my clients new to speaking encounter.
The first thing - and this is pretty common -(even the confident ones) say once they get up there they lock up.

I have found that the key reason for this is - once they see the audience it triggers in them any doubt about who they are - or if people will like or respect them.

Two ways to overcome this is - make sure you are really confident with who you are before you get on stage - now what you stand for - be honest - be yourself and know yourself.

2nd is know what you are going to talk about. Have a good confident opening that builds credibility and also a solid ending -

when asked a question ALWAYS pause - breath and then answer - and if you dont know the answer congratulate them on the question and tell them to come up at teh end and get their details and send them the answer once you look into it - dont make stuff up to save face in the short term.

This is pretty basic i know - so sorry if it is all obvious - but if it helps them great.

    Best of luck.

That's great. It is hard to think of anything that gives you more instant credibility than a radio commentator spot.

    Congratulations.
