Domain name record smashed after 'schoolboy error'

The record for the most expensive .com.au domain name was broken today after the owner of investmentproperty.com.au let the name expire and it was snapped up at auction for $125,000.
Mark Lye, CEO of Netfleet, the domain name aftermarket where the name was sold, said the final price was "quite exceptional" but the previous owners who let it expire would be "kicking themselves".
"It's a schoolboy error really for a domain of that value to not renew it in time," he said.

That has got to hurt pretty bad! :-( Considering there's a grace period after the expiration, it really took some negligence to miss the opportunity to renew.

Good point, just double checked that all my domain are on auto renew. I do have some domains however that I am not planning to renew and I will just let them to expire, so hopefully they wont sell for a good price later.

There was a time this happened to Microsoft when they allowed the hotmail.com to expire and someone snatched it. MS went to court and got it back. So please explain to me how come the above company cannot do the same? or maybe I am misinformed about MS domain issues which happened in 2003
