At what point do I need to upgrade to dedicated server?

Title says it all..

I'm currently on a shared package and I don't want my site to crash because of traffic. What signs do I look for to know it's time to upgrade?

Is it just based on factors like my website is running slow, pages taking forever to load, etc. Things like that? Or something completely different?

Even a site like WF is ran on more than one dedicated server, right? Would you look for the same signs when adding more than one dedicated server?

Thanks

Make sure to run GoogleAnalytics on your site, spikes in traffic could have adverse effects on the loading times. Also, it wouldnt be a bad idea to have contact info so that if someone notices lagging, they could notify you (Also a daily/weekly check yourself wouldn't hurt)

If you're making thousands from your sites, opting for dedicated or a vps is a no brainer.

Just as a rule of thumb, when you have reached over 75% of server resources available. Upgrade if you can.

We have students on everything from shared accounts to multiple load-balanced servers and clouds.

One advantage of cloud computing which is really going to take over the dedicated scene (in many ways it already has) is that you can just expand your cloud as you need it without having to move your sites.

If you are on a shared site right now a cheaper option is VPS (Virtual Private Server) and you have more resources without the cost of dedicated. Hostgator offers a pretty good setup that you can choose a level and upgrade to a higher level at any time. However, if you outgrow a VPS LVL9 then look at the cloud option. For that I recommend Softlayer.

However, VPS sounds like your best option right now as you can have full root access to the box to make a wide range of tweaks for performance such as EAccelerator, MySQL tweaks, and stuff that speeds up performance a lot.

    All the best

    Hi,

As said above, a VPS server - which can also be a cloud server is a good long term solution, I personally have two and recently upgraded one of them within a matter of minutes to handle an upcoming increase in traffic.

The big advantage of a VPS on the cloud is it's flexibility to upgrade (or downgrade) as demands change.

Signs to look out for are not easy on a shared account as you don't have direct access to the server statistics.

With most VPS servers, you can tell how much memory is being used, whether you have a lot of processes running and usually can get graphical analysis of your traffic usage.
