I made a huge boo boo last night :(

I'd not long finished the setup of a new website in a new niche and i decided to start a new website while iw ait for things to happen only to find i accidently deleted the wrong mysql database!

I'm with 1&1 so within 10 minutes i called them up, i think it was an international calls icne the guy had an american accent.

He said he will try to get the database restored and will pass the message to the administrators.

That was about 8pm last night, it's 10.30am now. the site hadn't been properly indexed by google yet so i don't want it offline too long.

Do you think it should have been done by now?

"Should" is one thing. If you are lucky it may get fixed soon.
1&1 has a rather poor reputation, to tell you the truth. But you may be lucky with them.

    Hi Matt.

I've no experience of 1&1 to offer, but had the new site/database actually been up long enough to be backed up in the first place?

That's assuming you and/or 1&1 actually do backups of your MySql databases.

I'm not enough of a MySql whiz to know whether you can retrieve a database from MySql if it's been dropped (deleted) by the user and there is no backup available, but I think it is unlikely.

I made the same boo boo recently. My host was able to retrieve the database within an hour of my sending a ticket so I know it can be done. It was not 1&1. Hope you get it sorted.

Just got off the phone, this time the guy was more helpful. The turnaround he said is 24-48 hours.

when backups are restored, do you think the DB will just reappear in my list of databases or will it get restored into some sort of file on my hosting for me to import?

He said it would be in a folder you see.

    That's good news at least.

Could be either I guess, if they said it will be in a folder then I would assume it's a file which you can import through PHPAdmin.

      Matt,

I see a few problems here:

      1. 1&1
      2. Paying for calls to the support team.
      3. Not having this resolved within an hour.
      4. Not being able to do it yourself through a GUI.
      5. Having 24-hour support at your hoster.

I feel for ya. This is a terrible situation to be in. I believe that having solid, daily backups, understanding the restore process, having control over your lifeblood (your websites) is just a part of doing business.

Thanks for the post. It may be a wakeup call for a lot of us!

I'm sure they'll be able to get you going again. Best of luck!

1and1 (I also unfortunately host through them) have terrible tech support.
You'd think the tech support people would know more than I do about their job, unfortunately I've yet to see that to be true.

Now you know to make backups on your own

Use skype to call, much cheaper.

This is the email i got.

my first call was 10 minutes after i deleted the DB. Irt was in "deleting" stage for 10 minutes and i called within a minute of it being deleted fully.

Then today i also called so i don't understand why they can't restore?

          what should i do?
