I was checking a competitor's site the other day in Yahoo Site Explorer and noticed he had a ton of backlinks from tumblr pointing to his money site, which is a Wordpress blog.

So I started exploring all these links to different tumblr blogs that he had 'liked'. Now if you are familiar with tumblr, when you 'like' or 'follow' someone else's blog, your screenname shows up at the bottom of the page and says: 'seo-friendly-keyphrase liked this blog'

'seo-friendly-keyphrase' is a hyperlink, and 9 times out of 10 it points to that person's own tumblr account. BUT, he used a custom domain which you can easily setup in tumblr. So instead of pointing to somename.tumblr.com, it now points to hismoneysite.com

BUT, here's the kicker!! hismoneysite.com DOES NOT POINT TO HIS TUMBLR BLOG - it points to his off-site, wordpress blog hosted somewhere else.

I don't know how he did it so if you have any info about this I would appreciate it. I hope this is clear enough and not too confusing.

It looks like they don't require the A record to be set to your tumblr account. You can add any custom domain even if it points to another server.

hmm, according to this documentation on tumblr's website, you must point the A record to them: tumblr[dot]com-docs-en-custom_domains (I am not allowed to post links yet so just replace the hypens with a forward slash)

And in case I'm not being clear, here are the steps I am taking, please correct me if I'm wrong:

    From the Dashboard:

    1. Click on name of blog in top right corner

    2. Click the green settings button on right side

    3. URL field says shakeology-reviews[dot]tumblr[dot]com

Beneath that is a checkbox that as 'Use a custom domain name'

Underneath is an input field where you can put your custom domain

From my understanding of tumblr, this is the URL that is used when you 'liked' someone else's blog.

Now, I know there is another section where you can set up a page within a blog with a custom domain. You open the blog, click 'Customize' in the top right, add a new page, and then you can make any domain point to any page on your blog, but that is completely different than what I'm trying to do.

      Hey,

I saw you post on another forum which happens to be down atm
so I could not reply there.

Yes, you MUST change your A record *IF* you want tumbler to
use your domain name for your tumbler blog, but if you don't
change your A record, you'll get what you're looking for.
