Finding Your Articles Syndicated With No Resource Box?

I found an article of mine on a website called agway.com. They are hosting thousands of articles after stripping the resource information.

I sent them an email yesterday, on behalf of myself and the entire article marketing community threatening to report them to Network Solutions and Google. Took me all of 2 or 3 minutes.

Here was their response:

"Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We pulled your article from a free website and followed their guidelines for giving credit for the
article. We have removed it from our website and apologize for any
inconvenience.
Thank you."
BULLCRAP!

I know of no article directory that allows resource box stripping. If they did, nobody would submit to them!

I have added agway.com to the Article Directory Owner Blacklist as I do not know which directory they got my article from. Now everyone will know.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you how responded to this email. Let's just say it was professional, but not friendly at all.

Moral: Report it. Threaten. Sometimes it works.

Respectfully,
Allen Graves

Allen - I am on the road and away from my desktop computer right now - but I saw a software a couple of weeks ago that 'built' sites using article directory content - and it stripped the resource box 'for you' as a 'time saver'! YIKES!!

I will see if I can find that link when I get back - the point being that if this is a software being promoted you are going to see more of this happening (and yes, I know, it happens enough already)

Please let me know, either here or email me. I'd love to get my hands on that! LOL

I don't think it will work anyway - the search engines will be ALL OVER that within a very short period of time...especially if you let me know where it is.

There are many sites which would just copy your articles and not the resource box. Lately I don't even bother with them that much as most of them are on blogspot and you can't do much with them but mark them as spam.

I've had that happen many times as well. Usually on junk blogs that may have been auto-filled with nothing but articles and AdSense stuff along the sidebar. And the thing that gets me is--what benefit do they get from stripping out the resource boxes anyway.

What steams me, like you said, is that you put the work into writing the article--they leverage your work to get content--and you get no reward in the end from having them do that. Glad you took the time to write to them!

BTW I checked out your website-articles.net. You have great ideas for building your author base. I'll give it a shot sometime. Good luck!

Apologies if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Caffeinated Content plug-in for Wordpress scrape articles from somewhere without including the author's resource box?

I used caffeinated content once for getting articles and it did not leave the resource box intact. I quickly deleted all of those posts and now just use caffeinated content to get yahoo answers and youtube videos.

I couldn't see how to get CC to leave the resource box intact, so I too just use it for yahoo answers. I would be a bit annoyed if someone used my articles for their blog without including my resource box and I assumed others would feel the same way..

er... is that in keeping with Yahoo's T&Cs? That you can just 'borrow' their content (q's and A's) and 'repurpose it' on your own site? How is that better than stripping resource boxes???

Or do yahoo now encourage the republishing of their Q&A???

I'm actually not sure what Yahoo's terms are on this. I have used caffeinated content on just a handful of blogs and I have both Yahoo answers and Youtube videos on those blogs. I know that Youtube allows you to embed videos. Any links in the Yahoo answers (or questions) are left intact, that's how it's better than stripping out resource boxes.

I'm going to go and read over the TOS at Yahoo. If I'm breaking the rules I'll edit my blogs. I could just use Youtube videos.

I couldn't find anything in the Yahoo TOS that said you could not post Q&A from Yahoo Answers on another site or blog.

The people who originally wrote the questions and answers have the copyright to their material but anything posted using caffeinated content keeps their original content intact along with any signatures, back links, etc.

Maybe it's wrong to use Yahoo Answers on your site and maybe it's not, that's for everyone to decide for themselves but I could not find any instances of Yahoo saying it's not okay.

    Hi Allen,

Glad to see you bring this up. It didn't take long to do and was effective.

The excuse that was given sounds similar to the excuses I get when I tell people to remove my content from their website.

Here's the latest response I received when I sent a ceast and desist email"

"The article in question was obtained from ezinearticles.com with credits to
    the author."

What the guy had done was stripped out my resource box and left a link to Ezine Article Submission - Submit Your Best Quality Original Articles For Massive Exposure, Ezine Publishers Get 25 Free Article Reprints, which means he conciously removed my resource box.

I guess he thought his lame explanation was supposed to appease me.

I've noticed this too. But I've also noticed that with parked domains that have scraped content my anchor text hyperlink may not be active but if my resource box has the entire URL, the URL is clickable. So when I submit articles to EZA I'll usually put one anchor text link and one full URL in my resource box. Then I'm still getting an active link from these parked domain sites.

    Hi Folks,

Some article directories do strip out anchor text in the resource box ( most of the good ones don't though ) so make sure you include your site URL as well if you want a clickable link back to your site.

There is at least one PLR package floating around which has thousands of articles, some of which have been ripped from article directories (one article I checked in this package had been submitted to EzineArticles in 2006).

I have no details about who sells it, but I longer buy massive PLR article packs because of this. Besides, having the author's resource box at the end of an article doesn't seem to harm my sites, so I just use reprint articles now (they're free and easy to get).

I wonder if it would be different if the author resource box was included as part of the article itself - such as "the last four line paragraph". Seems that would be more likely to keep the bio with the article when scrapers are used, wouldn't it?

      Just a thought.

Yeah, I've had the same thing happen. And I've seen the sites crediting the article directory for the article, instead of leaving my bio box intact.

Alan , would you agree that it would be nice to somehow have the option to secure the resource box no mater how the article was used? However , on a sad note we know this will never become a reality.

It is sad that people are out there taking advantage of marketers that are busy writing articles for their site and they come along, steal the content and try to get credit for the work.

The only way I can think of, off hand, is to use a graphics tool to convert the article text into an image and display that on the page instead of html text.

However, you want your article image to be clear and readable, not like the captcha images, so it could conceivably still be automatically copied using an OCR (optical character recognition) program. Nothings perfect.

I've noticed my articles turning up on websites with no resource box a lot. I used to make sure that I had a link in the body of my article as well as the resource box. The scum that strip my resource box didn't seem to mind leaving the link in the body intact.

The recent draconian changes in article directory rules has put a stop to me doing that. I think that Ezinearticles still allows it but their rules of what you can and can't do made it impossible for me to get an article approved without a lot of hassle so I don't bother any more.

Nicola, you are right! I didn't pick the article template, which is why CC wasn't including the author resource box... I ran a test scrape after selecting the article template and sure enough, the author resource box appears in all it's glory...

If you leave the template as default, the resource box is not included, which is what I had done with previous efforts...

A great deal of this can be easily corrected as far as scrappers and etc... Which would render some products useless when it comes to article directories, such products as caffinated content and the one melody mentioned...

The only question, would the article directories be willing to pay for the solution to stop a great deal of this ???

Honestly and truly, I doubt that the article directories (or at least the big ones) really care. I think they are more concerned with their revenues than anything (i.e., EZA).

This is very true but remember where that revenue comes from ... It's the authors that build that revenue.

So true. So maybe there should be some type of boycott where everyone, or at least the people who care, stop sending their articles to these places for a while. Make them sit up and take notice and see what happens.

Horrible thing is: Articles directories grunt if there is a self promoting link in the article body. So they force us to submit an article with no links in artcle bodies.

These people who scrap articles from article directories don't post resourcebox.

Well ... there goes another blow to article authors.

Once I even saw the person who posted my article changed clickbank affiliate link to his own.

Not necessarily. There are still some that allow body links. If you are speaking of individual directories, then say that, but don't blanket the entire article directory owners' community.

              It's simply not the case.

Actually I disagree with this.. Article Marketers (authors) and Writers can make any article directory an authority site but that article directory can not make their site an authority site without authors and writers.

The fact that the article directory needs content matters a great deal. No content dead website, it's that simple... Because many article directories (not all) put all their eggs in one basket. They fully depend upon that content and traffic to even sustain themselves.

Fact is the article directories do allow others to take the content without any approval, without checking, without doing anything... Why is this ? Well basically a great deal falls back on what SuccessWarrior said, they care about that traffic and those clicks on those all too many google ads.

Now is there a solution to protect their future as an article directory ? Yep sure is, there are actually several solutions that can be combined and work together to help stop the scrappers and theft. Question is, do they value their business enough to pay for a solution ???

Mind you now, I did not say to protect the authors content.. I said to protect their article directory business and thus their own income..

It has gotten worse over the years. I am watching a new article I put on ezine articles and had isnare submit to other sites.

All of the sites posting to their pages so far have messed with my sig file. Examples: One is cutting the 5 tips article into 5 different posts, no link to my site. Another put my sig file at the top after the title in a separate box and then at the bottom said if published, make sure to credit them. It makes it look like they originated the article. One saying he is the author, etc.

I cannot keep up with getting this all straightened out anymore. Many are not keeping the sig file in at all.

And then I am using a new course being put together that the person plans on selling on clickbank. He blatantly says in it, to repurpose articles by adding paragraphs, add links, take several articles, stripping the sig files, putting them together as a report with all the sig files at the end and more. This is what he does.

I have not found time to email him yet with a complaint, but I plan on it. He is teaching a whole new crop of people to disregard copyright.

And then because I am a health professional, I also have people use some of my articles, but link to other vitamins and products as though I endorse them.

I have become very discouraged about writing articles to go in directories at this point. After it is scraped a couple times, there is often no indication that I wrote the article and certainly no links back to my site. Why continue to write them?

In the same way that we have to live with refund scammers, there will always be people who strip out article resource boxes. It happens so often with my stuff now that I've given up checking any more.

And to be honest, does it really matter in the bigger picture? Site owners take my RSS feeds to use on their sites as well. Great - I'm getting backlinks and sometimes real traffic from that. Something like 80% of the sites using my articles DO leave the resource box in, and as I'm blasting out 1000's of spun articles a week I'm pretty happy with that.

To look at it another way - lots of blackhatters use our articles to populate their sites where ONLY the bots ever get to see them at all as they're cloaked to usual viewers. The trade off is that they're usually too lazy to strip out the box anyway so I get link juice, but no-one actually sees my stuff on their scummy sites. I can live with that!

Anyone who's not getting the Resource Box in their Caffeinated Content output is just using the wrong template (file instead of article). But it's something of a grey hat tool anyway - what is white hat about producing loads of sites into which you've just put scraped content, resource boxes or not? I use it a lot, but to populate sites with my own content using the file template - it's a very powerful tool when used with a little thought.

Bottom line - when so many sites DO leave the resource box in, why waste any costly time at all on those that don't.

Well ... there goes another blow to article authors.
I would agree with allen not all article directories are this way.. Many good ones allow links in the body without killing your article with those "Evil Google Ads" ...

I thought in the Terms of Service for the major directories it specifically state what can and can't be done?

I wonder if anyone has ever actually sued someone for messing / tampering with their articles?

The other day, I was checking backlinks and noticed my yahoo answers were being posted on some type of answer forum I had never seen. It was very strange. They even put an avatar on my answer somehow. I got a bakclink from it, but I'm sure there are lots of other sites borrowing information from article directories or yahoo answers.

this is something that drives me up the wall.

every time i search for one of my own articles on google i find sites posting them without resource box. i've had a little success sending emails to hosting companies with details of the offending sites but i get the impression that they aren't all that interested.
