Free or Paid to build list?

Ok, so I'm in the process of trying to build a list. Since I'm offering writing services, I'm targeting small to medium-sized business in need of promotional writing for the Internet.

I've created this book, it's a promotional book on how businesses can make money with promotional books. However it still trying to figure out if I should give it away or charges small fee. Very small, like between .99-$5.

The reason I'm thinking of charging a fee is because of two reasons:

1. Business owners seem to think something is worth more if they had to pay something for it.

2. I want a good e-mail address and I know a lot of people have disposable e-mail addresses they use just for collecting freebies. However when they buy something they usually use the primary e-mail address so they can keep track of the receipt for their records.

What do you think?

(If it helps, it's a short book, about 10 pages.) I don't mind giving it away if that's the best option, but I'm not sure if it is.

Don't oversell it to businessmen, perhaps calling it a detailed guide, or comprehensive pamphlet, "for which I would like to keep you alerted to updates..." rather than a book.

Unless it were the latest secret trick to double your income, I might feel ripped of paying for a 10 page book.

Okay when it comes to writing a book I would say that you want to have more than 10 pages. I would call it a report or study. Not a book. Trust me one of the mistakes I made in the past. Even giving it away people do not feel that it works if you over sell it.

As for the fact that your target market is business people. How do you feel that it will help a business person? Is it a resource they will use over and over, or is it going to be something they halfheartedly read through and say whatever and forget it is on their hard drive.

I am not trying to be harsh, but when you are targeting small businesses, you want to give them your best stuff and keep building your relationship. Remember the more value you offer the more they will remember you and trust you.

And as for building a list of freebie seekers. Did you know there are a lot of people that have list where people do not buy anything for two years, because they are still letting this person add to their trust bank and then one day they buy the most expensive thing they offer, because the trust is so high they know it will rock them out of the park. Just something to think about.

      Hope this helps. =D

Ok, it's a report then. And I should give it away.

    Thanks.
