Facebook to Disable "Send an Update" On Fan Pages September 30

Facebook has begun notifying Page owners that on September 30th it will remove the "Send an Update" option that let Page admins send Messages to their fans. These Updates often went unseen since they were delivered to the rarely opened "Other" Facebook Messages inbox. Rather than have Page admins waste time using tool that didn't perform well, Facebook decided it would be best to remove it.

Heads up. Not sure if this will include Update All Fans on event pages.
Facebook to Disable “Send an Update” that Let Pages Reach Fans Directly Through Messages

Interesting... yeah seems like just posting an update to the fan page itself would get a lot more impressions.

Still, I'm sure large fan pages get some sort of benefit out of it. oh well.

Thanks for the update. I have several Fan Pages and have never once sent a message anyway.

In fact I was not even sure you were allowed to do it, thought it might be Spammy if you were selling something or whatever.

Haven't used the feature for a long time. When it first came out, it allowed you to get it inboxed along with the other messages...that's when it was useful. Once they came up with box 2, I stopped using the feature completely.

I think FB is going to get a lot tougher..
besides the messaging issue, if your "fans" don't interact with your page (ie, they read your updates in their newsfeed, but don't comment, etc), than FB will begin hiding your updates from their feeds! This is the new default settings within FB.

It's going to be critical to engage people, otherwise you will just fade away....

It will force a specific type of update that invites a response, instead of information that does not - even if that information is valuable.

Seems to me if a person does not want updates in their newsfeed they can simply delete your fan reference.

      Let the people decide!

I agree to this, and believe this was always the intention from Facebook (to ensure the right people are connected, rather than mass amounts of people - like a Myspace). So the goal as a Fan Page owner is to engage and strengthen the relationship with the fans to ensure interaction, or slip off the radar of your fans' news feeds.

It will certainly affect the number of Fan Pages and how Fan Page owners use their Page.

But I have "liked" many pages (and people!) that I am perfectly happy only seeing posts from them - no interaction needed.

For instance, the local pizza joint. I could care less if they try to engage me - I like them, I don't mind endorsing them via my 'like', and I'm perfectly content to just get updates from them regarding deals, etc.

Really really to the point. But question is: when fans never interact before, our post will just fade away in their newsfeed, how can we then engage them...Facebook this time is really too crucial to fan pages.

        Totally agree with you.
Sometimes, the posts won't show on the wall.
        Why they are hidden?

So this means that a marketer looking to send a broadcast will have to get the page owner to send the send - how to incentivise that is the challenge.

Although didn't use that feature for a while, I think this bad, When you have a major change, you need to update your users.

After testing this feature time and time again it never seemed to push any traffic my way - except of course in the very early days.

They're also getting rid of the discussions feature - which on most pages is spam anyways. I am a little sad to see this one go - as I had created a huge directory and tons of links using it.

The good news is they're always changing - so we'll say goodbye to old not so cool features for hopefully a new set of tools to help us get "viral."

    Cheers.
