How to apply the 80/20 Rule in Internet Marketing?

Hi

I was thinking about this rule. Lets say you are in Information Marketing Online selling your own products or being an affiliate..

What activities would represent the 20% that will give you the 80% of results?

Im having some problems prioritizing my activities. I was thinking the some of them would be:
  • Creating Content (for blogs, emails, article marketing, products, etc)
  • Creating marketing campaings (SEO, PPC, Adwords, Facebook)
  • Studying courses
  • Optimizing conversion on sales letters

Whats your opinion on this?

List building and offline marketing comprises my 20% that gives me my 80%

you are spot on - for an information marketing business the top priority is "creating content" and "creating marketing campaigns" to sell the content created.

Creating content is absolutely vital, but it takes so much time that I wou;dn't call it "a 20%"

I think once you can figure out a profitable PPC campaign, managing that can be the 20% that brings in a whole lot.

List building is huge too like others here said but that's always taken a ton of effort on my part, constantly creating content to keep people happy.

The 80/20 can only be fully utilized when you spend a few weeks to a month on performing an activity. From that activity you will be able to analyze what has worked for you better other things that you've tried.

So if you are a creating marketing campaigns with SEO, PPC, Adwords and Facebook you will eventually see a campaign that is more profitable than the other.

Lets say you make $20 total with PPC, Adwords, and Facebook but SEO makes you a large amount of money, let's say $80. Then SEO may just be the 20% of your efforts that produce the 80% of your income!

I think Timothy Ferris describes the 80/20 rule best when he emphasizes the importance of always looking deeper to find the next 20%.

So for this example you focus all of your efforts in SEO for a while and then analyze your outcome and look deeper into that experience to see what work you did in SEO produced the best results for you .

Don't stop at 80/20 then go to 95/5.

If your not making money it's pretty hard to guess what might be your highest payoff activities (although not impossible).

Start tracking stuff daily, if you are not making money, then work out a plan to get to the money making part. Most likely you will need traffic, so start tracking daily what is driving traffic, focus on the sources that provide the most conversions.
