List Builders and email marketers - How are you dealing with this

I've noticed over the last month or so that a lot of the emails I get from marketer's who's lists I am on is going to straight to my junk box.

I use hotmail and maybe that has something to do with it but regardless this is quite disturbing and makes me wonder about the future of email marketing which is about as close to free money as one can get.

Is there any way to combat this trend and have you noticed this happening as well?

Cheers

Jan

I try to watch my spam rating on Aweber when creating a new broadcast - they suggest staying under 5, but I have kept mine under 3. I also have "test subscribers" on various platforms (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) so I can see how the emails behave. So far so good as they've avoided the filters.

I'm with Kristi - I set up test accounts at the major web mail services, and keep my spamassasin score as low as possible.

I recently read that some isp's may be tracking open rates of mass mailers, and if very few of their emails are opened than future email from them will be more likely to go to spam folders. AOL does this already, according to returnpath.

The problem is that there is a fine line between spam and a welcome message. It depends on the reader and the subject. But the mistake is that we tend to abuse the list and force it with too many emails.

I develop a lot of my e-mails with some interactive
element such as getting the subscriber to click on
a link within the main body.

I think that if you can get your subscribers to interact
with your message - e.g. by opening it, by clicking on
the links, by replying to your message, etc, then your
e-mail is seen as being more relevant and less likely to
    land in spam/junk.

Also, ask your subscribers to whitelist you and add you
    to their approved senders list.

You can also look at encouraging people to subscribe
with e-mail addresses that don't cause problems (like
AOL, etc.). Or invite them to transition over to another
    e-mail address afterwards.

Obviously, sending people useful content and relevant
offers is key and make sure to use enticing subject
lines to maintain high open rates.

It's called white listing - is a big topic in b2b email marketing but virtually ignored in IM circles.

Get on Groupon or Early To Rises list. The *first* think you see is a message asking you to white list them.

We have discussions about this in a closed EEC group run by the DMA, the Direct Marketing Association (the largest, most authoritative and respected professional direct marketing industry association in the world).

Most of the Early to Rise e-mails that I receive have
a first line encouraging subscribers to Whitelist them...

"To ensure that you never miss an issue, please whitelist our email."

And that leads to a great page giving directions on how
to whitelist them using various e-mail clients:

There's also a little known "leg up" some of the larger email marketers
and list owners have - it's called CERTIFICATION....

With it, the best senders get automatically inboxed by the top ISPs plus, get this..

You can send images and rich media and it will automatically be TURNED ON (which can be huge for instantly boosting response with little extra work)

        great video here too:

I have been looking into this myself (via returnpath), mostly because I no longer want to use thrid party services like aweber, etc. Do you know if returnpath is the only way to get certified? It looks like some ISP's may let you do it with them directly...

edit: I am up-to-speed with dkim, sender id, feedback loops, etc..

Hey Jason - I only know of return path.

You are right about the 3rd party - are you thinking about Interspire.

The whole "deliverability" is just an aweber USP not grounded in fact -the moral of the story is to start building mobile lists too, before that gets too hard! (multiple modes of contact....)

@John - thanks will try that!

Lots of good info here. Seems like the white list strategy and/or a non commercial Aweber/Getresponse script is the the best way to go about it and obviously trying to keep spam ratings low.

              Cheers

I'm guessing it's because you used the url shortener and the forum software didn't recognize the url as an embeddable video.

Here's the same link using the naked url...

  • Well it depends what kind of email client your gonna use. You basically get what you pay for. Also try not to make your content look spammy either.

You were given accurate intel. And AOL is not the only one measuring interactivity as part of their "wanted mail" metrics.

I don't know anything about the thresholds, and probably couldn't mention them if I did, but it will be interesting to see how it develops.

There's a difference between whitelisting and certification. The ISPs have, as far as I know, whitelisting systems, but not certification.

Then there's the whole third-party IP reputation system nonsense. Some of those are okay, and some have really bizarre false-positive issues that can be difficult to impossible to correct.

yep I've been using interspire for a client for about 4 months (and really like it), and decided I'd like to get it for myself and invest the time to build my own sender rep, etc with it.

mobile lists: I've built a mobile list for this same client Again, I realized "hmm, gotta look into doing do this for myself". Mobile just may email marketing, 10 years ago

Make sure you have plenty of content to help with any links you have in your email. Also, test and make sure the email ends up in your inbox.
