Should I Change my Domain Name?

Hi,

I have a website with about 100 YT videos linking to it and I get about 1,000 visitors a month from that. I want to get my site all SEO'd up and try and target a keyword, that my site directly is about, but....

I don't have any of that long tail keyword in my domain name. Most of the high ranking sites for that keyword have at least one of the words from the long tail in in the domain. Should I change my domain and just use some kind of redirect for the old domain?

What are your thoughts. I heard that domain names don't affect SEO but I disagree with that unless you are some kind of authority site. I have a good site that I think I can rank for a 20,000 exact searches a month for. I have over 50 posts and give tons of great free content.

You may be overestimating the benefit if you are going off keyword tool numbers.

First you should look at exact or phrase match counts. Bearing in mind that the top search results gets some 35% to 45% of clicks, something at the bottom of page 1 gets more like 2% of the total clicks.

Be sure you have examined your logs to learn what keyword searches are bring your current visitors, you might find it's quite different than what you are targeting.

I would not want to lose the existing traffic by effectively starting over with a new domain.

In my opinion it's probably not worth it or necessary.

Sure, when you're setting up a website it's always good to consider the keyword in the domain name.

If you've already started to do some SEO and work on your current domain, I say stick with that - probably the right choice most of the time.
