Getting Started - Listen UP.

Okay - everyday I come in here and see completely clueless questions about "how do I make money online". I've seen people in trouble that had no clue that what they were doing could get them in trouble.

So -- if you are asking "How do I start a business online" -- here is some very straight dope for you.

If you have no clue how to run a business - then you need to get a little knowledge. If someone tells you that you don't need any knowledge, don't hand them money, they may be counting on ignorance to rip you off. Find a business textbook and read it or take a beginning class. Just because it's cheaper to start online does not mean that you can just ignore all the formalities. You can work for someone else online to help get your knowledge but DO NOT START your own business, build a website, or start posting content until you have some facts.

1. Online business is not a playground. There are legalities here just like anywhere else. Just because you hear of others getting away with crap they shouldn't be doing is no damned excuse when YOU get caught. "I didn't know" doesn't fly when your server pulls your site offline or in a courtroom. You are not a little kid, you are an adult and hold 100% responsibility for your actions. If you get caught doing something against someone else's TOS, they will ban your butt - If you get caught doing something illegal you can lose your website, get fined, or go to jail depending on the offense. You can not get over by blaming someone else. Recognize that responsibility. Nobody owes you Sh** from Shinola - so get over yourself and act with integrity.

2. Get to the official trademark and copyright websites and read up on what constitutes trademark and copyright infringement. You don't want to start your business reputation by being slime mold who steals.
Here's links (Sorry they are US, but will give anyone a good idea of their own country's laws, too - they are pretty much the same globally).
Patents: Start Here for First-Time Filers
Copyright: U.S. Copyright Office - Frequently Asked Questions

3. Find out what you need to be legally in business. Can you fly as a Cottage industry or do you need to incorporate? How much is the cost? Etc.

4. What types of documents are legally required on a website? Know that, know what disclaimers are and which you need to protect yourself. Find where to get legal copies or have them written for you by a professional.

5. Are you thinking of shipping items? Do you know the laws about shipping - domestic and internationally or do you have a company that will ship for you?
Find out what shipping laws are in the product planning stage before you need shipping, not when it's time to ship things.

6. Are you thinking of advertising a product - yours or someone else's? Do you know what constitutes False advertising? Do you know and understand FTC requirements for advertising? You better.

7. Are you thinking about a Joint Venture with someone? Are they suggesting a plan that will hold you leaving the bag if they decide to take the money and run? Have you asked for a contract? Have them send you a contract and have a lawyer or at least a paralegal look at it before you sign it. Do not get caught in a position to be held responsible for anything your partner might do that is fraudulent - including stealing form you and disappearing.

8. If you don't even know what you want to do yet - you aren't prepared to start yet. Period. At least know where you want to go with a business. Don't think you can come into a forum and realistically get an answer to a vague question such as "how do I make money online" or "what niche should I be in". No one business plan works for everyone and if you don't even have an idea of what you want to do, nobody is going to be able to help you - but........there are a lot of people who have products they'd love to lead you to buying. Being realistic about your preparedness to start a business can save you a LOT of money and frustration.

Now THAT'S how you start in online business. Once you have figured out that these steps are part of ANY business, offline or online, and are ready to actually be serious in the business market, feel free to ask questions when you need help. By the time you get done with those 8 steps you will probably be able to ask questions pointed enough that people can realistically answer them. You will also avoid being seen as scammer bait.

And THAT is the truth about starting a business online.

Maybe you don't like my style - but that's how I am and how I talk. I don't apologize or wear kid gloves - ever, really. If I come across as a wench...well..... I kinda am -- but I'm an honest one. You either get used to me or ya don't. This is me. Sucks huh?

        Seriously?

I saw it as just stating some FACTS that can help a lot of people.

If you think you know what you are doing, then by all means maybe this post was not for you.

Perhaps for your tastes. But you haven't been here very long, and probably don't realize just how many of these "hi I'm new, how do i make money on the Internet?" posts we get here every day.

Sal is correctly pointing out that an Internet-based business is just that - a business. Would you buy a restaurant or a store without any knowledge about the food service or retail industries.? Of course not! But it's amazing how many people just jump into Internet Marketing without a clue, let alone a proper business plan.

We welcome questions on this forum from beginners and marketers of all levels. But even beginners are expected to be able to do some basic research and have an idea as to how they can make money online.

Personally I thought it was an excellent post!

Perhaps the OP should be part of the required reading when someone types into the search "how do I make money online", or otherwise uses it as a starter thread.

Won't happen though, as this is a forum and new people join every day - and being new - they don't know how to use a forum except by posting something to it... such as - "how do I make money online"

        Top class OP though.

        Jeff.

Yes the content was spot on

it was the tone that I was referring to - maybe school m'am-y

I'm sure the content is entirely correct

however the fact remains that many folks are looking to the internet to get away from "traditional" business - they may be thinking incorrectly

I just think a more friendly and less exasperated tone from the OP would have been better.

If you are making a nice living online then good for you but there are millions of desperate people who arent

FYI I have been in my offline business for 23 years so I know business

And this post was target at exactly that demographic - those who are struggling. Rather than sugar-coat it Sal has presented the facts. Her "tone" is her own unique style, and as for being "friendly" well how much more "friendly" can you be than offering solid advice to those who need it - and totally unsolicited I might add?

You are of course entitled to your own opinion, but as Dennis pointed out your comment hardly adds any value to an otherwise excellent thread.

If we are comparing notes than I have been in business for 7 years more than you, but how is this even relevant to this thread? And if you do indeed have such superb business knowledge then why not enlighten us with some of your business wisdom, instead of insulting a long-standing member of the forum because you don't like the "tone" of her post?

You may indeed know business but your knowledge of etiquette leaves a lot to be desired.

      JudoRick,

That's an interesting perspective seeing that she provided a bunch of gold that would help anyone who wants to start a serious business online or at least get them started in the right direction. It's advice that a lot of people ignore and yet later down the road they're thousands of dollars in the hole because they couldn't be bothered to learn business 101.

Was she on her soapbox? A little bit, yes, but her intentions were plainly obvious - and that was to actually help people who are looking for some guidance.

Though I can almost guarantee for every one person who reads the OP and likes it, there are probably ten or more people thinking "ah, who needs that business advice, I just want to make money."

And therein lies the problem and we will continue to see the same threads where people "want to make money" or want to learn the "best method" for making money, when the answer is right in front of their nose on their computer, their local library, and their local bookstore.

Sorry to join in the chorus too, but -

Have you ever seen Ayn Rand being interviewed?

She would typically answer the usual kind of question that anyone would ask her as if she was shocked that it would be asked in the first place, kind of like, 'Don't you people get it?'

I think there was a subtle, but educational point behind her decision to answer in that way.
