Keep up with Competition

I once held a #2 position for my target keyword for a couple years. Due to lack of maintenance, I started slipping and I am now around #6.

After some competitive research, I found domains ranking above mine to have many more backlinks than I have. The backlinks however, are junk in-context links from junk blog sites. There are hundreds though! It appears they're using one of those article publishing services to mass publish them.

Questions is, should I now participate in an auto article submission program, or should I just focus on obtaining good quality links?

I know the answer is fairly obvious, although I just wanted someones input on this one. Will the sites above me eventually become penalized because of the junk backlinks?

Thanks!

Whether they will ebentualyl be penalised is anyone's guess. I'd say it's unlikely that Google will punish them, although they may devalue those links - which would have the same effect: a fall in rankings.

I would personally launch a two-pronged attack to try to regain ground: outsource some lower-quality high-volume link-building - there are some great services listed in the Warriors for Hire section - but concentrate your own efforts on getting some good quality, high PR links to your site - it depends on your niche, but I'd look at guest blogging and commenting (meaningfully!) on other blogs in your niche.

    Thanks Karen,
Good idea. I will grab some lower quality links while focusing on the high value ones. As for commenting, this is something I've never taken much time to do. Most seem to be "nofollow" links. I will have to find some followed ones
    Thanks again Karen.
