What's the best name to use for Twitter?

I'm about to open a Twitter account, and I'm a little undecided on my username.

I'm considering using my own name, although my last name is lengthy (like Cavanaugh or Wagenheim).

Then again, as I'm aiming to position myself in the IM world primarily as a writer, I've thought about using the name of my site. It's definitely shorter than my own name, which I like.

What's your opinion?

You could come up with another name later.

Why not have a couple names?

One related to your niches biz name and or one for whatever else you want under a pen name or your real name. I'm using pen names and niche related biz names for now.

    Cheers,

Well, since writing is my passion, I want to be myself for this one. For info products or niche projects, I've definitely considered that, but I'm stuck on what to use for my main Twitter account.

You could use a shortened version of your name as the username, like eddyc or ecole, or eddycool (i like that one best, should have used it) and then put your full name at the top of your profile page.

Use the name that you use to brand everything else about yourself. Unless you have a really quirky handle, then I'd stick with a variation of your real name.

Use your own name, if you want clients to see your tweets and hire you. It's VERY difficult to brand yourself online (or offline, for that matter), so every little bit helps.

I wish I'd given a little more thought to my Twitter user name, but who knew Twitter would become so popular?

        Cheers

I mentioned in my original post why I was considering something else. My last name is long and I don't like it, LOL!

But, I guess it doesn't really matter for that reason, at least that's what I'm picking up from you all.

Use whichever name you want to "brand". If you want people to know your name, use your own name. If you want people to know your biz name, use it instead.

I'm not trying to brand any one business when I'm on twitter, so I use my own name, but if I wanted to brand my tax biz, I would use @EbizTaxTips or something similar.

So I guess you need to know what your goal will be for your twitter account to determine which name to use, or you could setup multiple accounts for different goals.
