Lost Google Ranking... dont know why

Ive been at the #4 spot for my best keyword for months and yesterday I lost about 10 places. I hadnt done any link building or anything with the site in a while. It doesnt look like the competition had really built many more links if any either. I dont know what the reason is for the drop. I had stopped 'dancing' in Google a while ago.
This was my first site so I hadnt varied my achor text, could that be the problem? I think each page only had about 40 links.
If its a problem with my anchor text not being varied can I regain my lost status with more backlinks and varied anchor text?
I cloak my affiliate links using a nofollow tag in the html and a php redirect to the affiliate page. Could Google have got wise to this and this be the reason?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

You are really asking a question only Google can answer. There are a number of reasons why this would occur. If I was to make any suggestions, I would suggest you update the site with new content.

I think you may find Facebook's overhaul may have something to do with this.

I was speaking with some people last night about FB and how people with Blogs linking to FB and Twitter were shooting up the Google charts. It seems that Google and the FB changes are in a mutual appreciation society right now.

      Just a thought...

It's been common recently. Seems like it due to the Panda!

I'm just moving onwards in hope it won't happen too often!

          Exactly,

It is been a nightmare for me, and it is not easy to get to first page anymore. Panda has created hundreds of hours of additional work, so good luck.

          Success to all,

Not sure where you got that from. If you're creating good, original content that offers something to the reader then there's none of this "hundreds of hours additional work" none sense. My sites have never been affected by Panda - strange that, isn't it?

How old is your website? Because that really does seem a bit weird and usually once you get those good rankings they hardly never go away, or at least that's the way it has been for me..

Same thing has happened to me with one site I have. I have many sites, so i'm able to assess and compare things like link building speed and anchor text variation.

My site in question was hit with a -50 penalty across 100+ keywords.

It was making a nice $80 per day with adsense. I decided to swap out all the adsense units for a affiliate program for two days, but I went overboard with it. I had about 2 links and 2 image ads linking to the external landing page and it was cloaked and redirected and nofollowed.

I think I've been penalised because the amount of cloaked links and redirections. I've removed those links, reduced adsense blocks to 1 and have filed for a re-inclusion. You should try that.

Regardless of whether you file or not, the penalty expires in about 30 days --- some people say.

If you are not posting good content regularly watchout. SEO targets never sit still. It's harder to stay on top then it is getting there, especially for popular keyword. Always keep this in mind and you will not have to worry about it. You will normally stay in the top5.

I'm not entirely sure why it's happening in your case, however I have an authority website that varies in ranking for the keyword "Nokia N8", sometimes it's on the first page, sometimes the second and sometimes even the third page. I'm not entirely sure why this happens but it's annoying and something I have to live with.

He site has all unique and quality content and has only ORGANIC, natural links from websites like Nokia.com and other huge authority sites on the Internet.

So in essence these things just happen, it may or may not be related to something you have done or maybe have not done.

Everyone's obsessed about the Panda update

My sites have been around since 2007, never been effected by any of the updates

if your links are good, then theres no point worrying over any update to come or gone

Ive never used EDU, profile or spun content for links and never had a problem

google changes their rules all the time... long term relying on google might not always work out, sry but this i think is the truth.

an issue everybody involved with SEO face, atleast before your an authority site.

The recent changes in the google algorithms (Panda) changed the ranking of a lot of sites, some with content that also exists on other sites were particularly hurt.

Small sites have to regularly add fresh content, weekly or more often, just to maintain their search ranking, aggressively securing new backlinks to the site will help ranking too.

Examine the higher ranked sites backlinks using the Yahoo site explorer (while it still exists) to compare their links to yours.

google is a mystery, a lot of things that cause us to get the effect of the google dance. could be because the content is not original, back links that too at a push, which is not good backlinks of services you use, or your competitors better than you.
