Why is there no social marketing thread here?

I'm just wondering why there are categories here at the Warrior Forum for SEO, web design, offline marketing, programming, etc, but there is no specific thread category for social marketing?

I got 300 unique views to my site today, and at least 80% of that was from social promotion.

I've only been doing it seriously for about six months, although I've had an interest in it since I started writing online.

I would hazard a guess that after two years of writing everyday, I have gotten more actual hits from social sites, and sites other than Google than from Google, which is quite a lot of traffic, about half a million hits or more over that time, and I'm still just starting out.

So why don't I see more threads about how to get free traffic from Facebook and Twitter, StumbleUpon, You Tube, and other methods of social marketing? Probably because there's not a specific thread for it here.

Please give me as many tips as you can about how you use social sites for free or cheap traffic, and be specific.

I am sorry if this comes across as rude, but why are you asking us when you already have a link to the answer in your signature below?

I'm trying to learn as much as I can about social promotion so I can be an authority on it, and so I can sell it as a service. I haven't figured out Facebook yet, I get most of my traffic from Twitter. It's a fair question to ask, and I've asked it before, without getting all the answers I wanted.

I need the essay, people keep saying Facebook, but at least give me a clue, what are you talking about? Facebook Ads, Facebook groups, Facebook pages, Facebook friends? I don't get where the traffic comes from.

Not be flip, but traffic comes from wherever it comes from. Just because millions of people use Facebook multiple times per day, it should not be inferred that any of them will ever visit your website. Facebook will give you great exposure, but this doesn't always translate into sales.

I'm betting there is someone on the WF who is tracking their Facebook stats a lot closer than I do, and are really well-versed on the topic, who who could jump in here. Without even doing the math, a best guess is that my best performing Facebook efforts yield a dismal 1% click through rate and .5% conversions. There are just way too many other ways to skin this fish so I don't spend a lot of time worrying about Facebook.

You are making this work at home stuff way harder than it is. Ready for some sanity? Clear your head and start over.

Rowan, to answer the question in your header...

Most of the subsections came about when their subject matter dominated the main forum for an extended period of time. In order to free up the main forum, these subjects got their own sections.

Yep, and if it continues long enough to bother enough people who are NOT interested, it will probably get its own section...

One thing I've noticed about specialized forums, be it a subsection of a big forum like this one or a small niche forum, they tend to get incestuous. Over time, there gets to be one accepted POV, and anyone who raises a different one gets shouted down. At which point it stagnates and turns into the online equivalent of the coffee klatch at your local diner. Everyone know what everyone else is going to say, but they all get together and say it anyway.

I really hope social marketing stays in the main forum for some time to come so we can get input, anecdotes and POV from a wide range of people and experience levels...

    Facebook is where it's at.
You realize how annoying that is? I know Facebook is where it's at, it's where everyone is, all the time. I've made dozens of Facebook pages, I've got thousands of friends, I've got thousands of likes on different pages, I've tried Facebook Ads, made groups, and I have probably gotten less than ten thousand hits from Facebook in two years. What aren't you telling me?

Rowan, I went to your website to see what you already had on Facebook. Sounds like you are focusing too much on promotion and not enough on social. In fact, it looks like your major FB thrust is selling 'likes'...

I'm still figuring out FB myself, but what I'm finding is that people want to connect with people, not be promoted to. It looks like it will be a fantastic research tool as I fine tune my own approach.

I may be wrong, but it looks like starting and/or joining groups is fairly similar to starting and/or joining forums. You aren't there to promote directly, you're there to learn, share and socialize; you have a chance to put a human face on a digital entity (your business).

Like I say, I'm still figuring this out for myself. My own page is a mess, haven't even looked at it in months. I set it up because it was the hot 'shiny object' at the time and I still have occasional relapses of SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome).

This time, I'm doing my homework and going in with a plan...

Yeah, I'm sure there's someone here who can explain the best way to use Facebook to get cheap or free traffic, and that knowledge could potentially be worth millions, that's why I'm pushing for answers. That's also probably why people are reluctant to share it, if they know.
