I received an invite but haven't checked out all of the bells and whistles yet. Looks interesting though.

I think it is based on how much you spend via paypal........... of course what I spend on paypal, comes from what I earn and put automatically into paypal, thankfully I am earning..........

I think I like the upgrade of dedicated customer service support......... and resolution support......... that could come in handy, although I do my best to make sure I do not have many problems with clients for sure.......

And yep, it is invite only, I believe....... so, gotta start spending more..... I know your earning for sure .......

Not so sure it's about how much you earn thru PP, than how much you spend through your PP ac.

I know this based on messaging I'm seeing in our two accounts - one for spending, one for earning.

In other words, "pay us more money and we'll give you better service." PayPal's fees aren't awful, but I feel like we pay them enough as it is. The perks would have to be worth it.

Yes. ie: pay others thru your Paypal, more often...

Yep, I believe that's the short of it...........

If you purchase things, do it via paypal to others, that will get you invited eventually. I purchase anything I need related to my graphics service via paypal, and I have some monthly payments to a few services coming out of paypal, which helps....

Either way, its nice to be noticed by them, and hopefully I will not have to use any of their upgrade services, but If I do, at least they are endeavoring to stand behing me in the process.

My wife got a free $5.00 gift for starbucks coffee today (on paypal) from the udgrade, which I know she will enjoy!

Huh. That's funny. I assumed when I got the email that it was a phising attempt because I don't think I actually spent that much money on Paypal this year. I am just a poor newbie here trying to figure this stuff out at this point.

I did make one large purchase (and enough smaller ones) this year but I don't think I paid through paypal on that one...I'll have to take a look.

Doesn't it have something to do with spending 5k through your paypal account?
I received an email some months ago and I lost it.

Can't say that i'm too interested in the perks.

Yes, you need to be doing over $5k per year. If you fall below that figure one year then your membership gets cancelled.

How did I become an Advantage member?

Your account was upgraded to PayPal Advantage status because you spent over $5,000 using PayPal in a calendar year.

How do I retain my Advantage membership?

After your initial qualification, spend $5,000 with PayPal in the next calendar year. Once you do, your membership will be automatically renewed for an additional year. For example, if you qualified in September 2011, you'll have PayPal Advantage status until December 31, 2012, but you'll need to spend $5,000 in 2012 to continue your Advantage status for 2013.

They just upgraded me today as well... Whatever. I don't know how useful it will be, have to see what kind of "Insider Perks" they send me I've had a dedicated account rep I can reach out to for years, so "dedicated support" prolly won't mean much.

Interesting to see them trying to pump up spending tho- they must be feeling the heat and decided to change their ways a bit (one can only hope).

@WillR: You don't have to requalify every month- just yearly. Do over 5000 in any one YEAR, and the entire next year you are one of the cool kids

I received this email a couple hours ago.

I'll have to look into this. If I get better customer service because I am an Advantage Member then I'll be happy.

I've been in that for a couple of years or so. I always spend at least $5,000 in a year. But I have never taken advantage of any of the "benefits". They haven't really offered anything I was interested in.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, supposedly, they started The Advantage program in April 2010?

Either way, your probably like me, you were definately were not trying to achieve anything, just spending out of your paypal account......

I was "upgraded" as well. And I did receive at least one tangible benefit -they gave me a coupon for a free cup of coffee at Starbucks!

Beyond that, I'm not sure it has much relevance for me. It sounds like a mainly symbolic upgrade to encourage you to spend more for some vague advantages.

      LOL... Yeah, I hear ya...

I guess I'm even out on that benefit down here in Brazil...

But then again, I'd much rather have my Brazilian coffee than Starbucks anyway!

Interesting list of features, but nothing special, imo.

Except the dedicated agent (as opposed to the non-dedicated ones) and the on-your-side dispute resolution service, the rest sounds almost like my motor club membership - just needs free towing..:-)

I don't know if it's related, but I recently bought a typical eBook package from someone whose sales page offered a "100% no-questions-asked money-back guarantee". I looked the material over and thought it sucked. I think that whomever this guy bought the site from put far more effort into the sales page than they did in the material (looked like a crappy PLR report).

Anyway, I sent an email asking for a refund. I got no reply. After a week, I sent another. No reply. After another week, I posted something at the guy's support desk. No reply. A week later, I filed a dispute with PayPal, thinking THAT might FINALLY get his attention. No reply. I finally called up PayPal to talk with a representative, mostly out of curiosity about what could be done, if anything.

She suggested I elevate my dispute to a claim. I said, "This is a digital download product and I know that if I elevate it to a claim, it will be immediately closed-out and nothing will happen." She thought for a moment and then realized I was right.

I said I don't ask for many refunds, and if it were only $5, I wouldn't bother in this case. But for what I paid, I thought it was a rip-off. Also, the seller has several places on the sales page that speak very prominently about his "100% no-questions-asked money-back guarantee". While I realize that PayPal's policy is not to deal with disputes involving digital download products, it concerns me that some marketers like this guy might take advantage of people by offering a "100% no-questions-asked money-back guarantee" with absolutely no intention of honoring it, knowing PayPal won't do anything.

She put me on hold for a couple of minutes, and then came back and said, "Here's what I'll do... I'll escalate this to a claim and it will get closed out. Then I'll put in a request for a CREDIT TO YOUR ACCOUNT for the amount of the purchase. It won't show up for a couple of days, so be patient. And then I'll have our Fraud Department take a look at this seller's account to see if this might be a pattern with them."

I asked if the credit would be taken from the seller's account, and she said no, it would just be a credit issued by PayPal. (wow!)

The credit showed up in my account 2 days later. Actually, it was MORE than they said it would be.

Again, I dunno if this is because I'm an Advantage Member (because I use my PayPal account and debit card a LOT) or just because I'm a good schmoozer. Either way, I'm very happy!

I am sure it helped that you did not fly off the handle and get all rude, and were courteous........ Well, at least it seems you were the way you write about the situation.

Being the Advantage Member probably helped for sure, but the way you handle and talk to people goes a looooooooooooooooooong way in all walks of life too.

Glad it worked out for you............!

At first, I thought they offered me the Advantage membership as a kind of apology because of a problem I had with them. It wasn't IM related -an ATM malfunction where I got billed without being able to withdraw cash. This was quickly resolved, and then a day or two later I found out I had been "upgraded." Seeing that many other people also were at the same time, I suppose this is just a coincidence.
