Have you customized your 404 error page, or do you use the default one? I added a search box to mine so my visitors can find what they are looking if this happens.Some people also put a sitemap on the 404 error page.

    I have always used customised 404 pages because there's nothing more frustrating than getting an ugly browser message "page not found" etc.

    Produce something that is friendly, offers assistance and importantly encourages the visitor to report the error to you so you can do something about it.

    I use a script that tracks why the 404 appears and get it send to my inbox.
    Now I don't have any 404 pages anymore
