Are popups still shunned or is it effective as an advertising campaign for your site? Do you lose traffic if you use it?

i would say that i normally associate popup having sites as either
    1. Scam site
    2. Amateur sites

Thats just me.. I just dont like 'em.

And its not true "majority" like popup advertising. People generally dont like advertising and being marketed too. Popup is another "in your face" marketing strategy that is poorly looked upon..

But hey, i dont like em, so i might be biased. No offense :-)

When I think of pop ups, I'm immediately reminded of 1999. If you notice the IM trends over the years, pop ups were popular around turn of the century and got banned/disregarded everywhere (for the most part) since they are considered scammy and (to be blunt) completely irritating.

I suppose it really depends on your niche, but for typical marketing of products or services, I would strongly suggest avoiding pop up ads. Try and ask yourself why nobody is doing them these days - relatively speaking.

I don't think popups are still effective in advertising. Why? first, people despise popups as it affects their searching experience. Second, people don't trust popup advertisements on the web and often associate popups with scams.

Personally, I don't like pop-up. It is annoying when an unrequested page just suddenly appear in front of the page that you are looking at.

But fly-in ads is okay, for me.

It all really depends on the type of audience you have. Some like popups, some hate them and a few other don't mind them. It can be an effective strategy, sure, just test to be sure your audience won't be alienated by them.
