Although PDF is an online format, some, like me, will print your report, WSO, etc., so that notes and scribbles can be made, and it can be stored in a binder for future reference without fear of digital deletion.

If you hyperlink words and the web page you are hyperlinking to is not obvious from the text, when one reads your printed report one has no idea what the link is. The text just says "Click Here".

Consider including the full link in your text. If it is an affiliate link, use a link to one of your web pages that redirects with your affiliate code.

It's a good reminder that some people will print out your PDFs. That's why I include page numbers and start paragraphs, headings and chapters on a new page when needed. Some people think it's done to increase white space (and I suppose some people do it for that reason) but I do it to make it easier for people who print my PDFs.

What I do is imagine what would happen if somebody dropped all of the pages on the floor, and then try to leave as many breadcrumbs as I can without it getting too ungainly.

I'm sure there are a few other tips, too.

    All the best,
    Michael

    Thanks for the good reminder..

Whenever i sit down to write a document, i always hyperlink it becouse .. (wait for it) .. it is prettier that way ! :-p

I always forget about the functionality of it- that my prospects might want to print it and read it offline. Its a biased perception of mine that becouse i rarely print things noadays, nobody else does.

You make a good point. And your suggestion to link to your page is appreciated to. Although I know this, it was sort of filed away.

Thanks Brian! that had never occurred to me. I don't use many links in pdf documents, but I intend to do what your suggest in the future. I'd forotten there probably are many who do print out pdfs.

Would a "links referenced" page be better?

I have seen some people put the actual URL in the paragraphs but IMHO that's distracting.

You could also hyperlink it within the text but leave a small citation so that those who are printing the PDF can find the URL in a glossary or addendum at the end.

Garrie makes a good point, a Links Referenced page could be help here. If you've printed out a PDF, you're not going to flip through the whole thing to find all the links again. It'd be very helpful to have them all centralized in one spot so you can go through after the fact.
