Google +1 and adsense

Just got a notice in the old inbox. Probably many of you have seen. +1 button is going to appear next to adsense ads for Content and Mobile.

As explained in the email it's supposed to help filter the best ads to display to your audience (in a nutshell).

It sounds really good when reading. But I know that there are some drawbacks - I just can't think of them.

I guess we will have to see how this plays out. There is the choice to opt out as mentioned.

I have noticed that Adsense at times has a hard time targeting despite the best efforts to let Google know what the content is about.

Though once you have a complete site going it seems to be highly targeted. So, all I can think of is that this will help further deliver the ads that are most well received.

However, if you play around with ad placement, or use well tested ad placements then this is rarely a problem.

So I'm not sure that I see the benefit of this.

In light of all of the heat that has been on Google lately from the feds, I kind of feel like this is them trying to work with people, but it's already working. (why fix what's not broken?) Feels to me like they're trying to justify this either...

a: to look good and like they actually work well with businesses online
b: to justify a social product that maybe they feel is not meeting expectation.

I don't know - it just feels desperate somehow, and not like much of an improvement, but rather "oh wait, here's another possible angle on this".

What do you think?
