It's been more than a year since I started dabbling in IM. Although I had a few victories here and there (affiliate commissions once in a blue moon and a few cents per day with Adsense), I am far from making a consistent income online. How I wish I can wake up every morning excited about checking my Paypal account to see how much money I made in my sleep! With no job (and no dependents), I would be lucky to make a hundred bucks per month, all of which are spent on my personal needs and buying domain names and paying for hosting.

I'm thinking about starting a writing service here. I checked out the Warrior for Hire forum and see several writers plying their trade there. I would love to join in on the fun but I don't know how to price my services. If I set my rates at the lowest end of the spectrum (say, 1 cent per word), I'm afraid I will get sick and tired of writing for peanuts. If I charge a higher rate, I will enjoy writing better but I would attract fewer clients. I'm from a country where English is a second language (though it is considered the official language here), so I think most people would expect me to charge lower rates, although I'm confident enough of my writing abilities.

There's no turning back for me. My bank account balance is fast dwindling and my next Adsense payout is about a month away. I'm thinking that if I start a writing service and have enough money, I will just outsource some of my other IM tasks such as linkbuilding. My biggest problem is time management; I have trouble setting and following a schedule. I would love to hear suggestions from people who are doing freelance writing aside from their IM activities. How did you do it?

Write to my email address below and I'll send to you a little something to get you up to speed and charging good money.

For example, article writing, myself and my business partner we're receiving 20 cents a word. That's correct - 25 words, not 500 words for $5.

    500 words for $100.

Want to find out more? Email me and I'll send you something which will help you out with no catches whatsoever.

You're writing btw, it's pretty good.

    Kindest regards,

    Mark Andrews

I see no hint at all in your writing that you are not a native english speaker.. so don't let that doubt creep into your thoughts.

Thank you very much for your offer of assistance, Mark. I believe you are in the copywriting business and although I am interested in learning the tricks of the trade, I have always thought that it's difficult to be a highly-paid copywriter. As they say, there's no harm in trying.

Thank you for the compliments. Sometimes, I have doubts and fears which often stop me from earning more money from my writing craft and from my other moneymaking ventures. I can't count how many times I passed up on writing projects because I didn't feel confident enough. Hopefully, I'll gain more confidence as time passes by and I gain more experience.

        Hey Don,

I agree with what Jason has stated above. I could not tell from your writing that you were not a native English speaker.

I would also like to thank you for starting this thread, because I was considering starting a writing business as well. I hope more people chime in with their tips on how to get started.

I have been doing a lot of research lately on this forum trying to get some kind of idea of how I should get started. The thing that has held me back is similar to yours, as I am not sure what my rates should be. I definitely know that I do not want to be writing articles for $0.01 cent per word.

I have found some interesting threads here on the forum, and I generally like to read posts by Alexa, Danielle, and a few others who provide great information about writing. It seems that the clients that are willing to pay more for articles are the easiest to work with, and the clients who want cheap articles will expect you to perform miracles for $5.00. I believe Alexa also stated that these higher priced clients tend to buy more articles if your quality is good, because they know what to do with the content and how to make money from it.

I also believe there is a WSO about how to get started, but I'm not sure what the link to it is. I could find it for you if you want.

I don't think you should worry about your doubts and fears, everyone has them. Just don't let those fears stand in your way of success. I have those same fears and I am a native English speaker. I also have a degree in information technology, in which technical writing was my strong suit.

I wish you success in your writing business!

        Aloha,

        Darryl

You don't seem like a non-native speaker at all. You write very well from what I can see. Even when you aren't writing for gigs, absolutely keep writing with Adsense ads attached to your writing. That's how residual income is made.
