404 page not found...what does this mean....pages are indexed

I am looking at a site for sale to possibly buy. The inner pages show a 404 not found when I click on them. But I did a site:www.name.com search on google to see if the site is indexed and it has quite a few pages indexed but again when I click on them is shows a 404 not found. The only page I can click on is the home page.

What does this mean....it looks like a good keyword and it is slightly aged...should I consider buying it???

It would mean that at one point Google indexed the pages but the actual pages have been removed or rename so they are missing when you try to access them.

Should I consider that a reason not to buy the site. I guess I would have to reinstall the pages and they would be as if they were never there.

If most of them are missing, I'd definitely start asking questions...like why? But it doesn't look good if all of the ones they have indexed are now not found.

404 Error means the pages are indexed but deleted from the site at the moment.
you find 404 error for some pages, you can consider buying it but lots of 404 errors will create issues. Not good for SEO purpose as well.
You can request via your webmasters tool as well to remove these pages from search ( if you buy the site )
Don't buy if almost all inner pages this error.
