.COM or .INFO - Does Google Care for SERPS?

So I'm planning on buying some domains to use for some blogs and was wondering if anyone knew if google doesn't like .INFO domains as much as .COM.

Do sites rank better if they are .COM vs .INFO if they have the same backlinks, SEO techniques, etc etc?

I don't know for certain, but what I do know is that I rarely see a .info on page 1 of Google. I would always go for a .com first, then a .org or a .net

Perhaps that is more a matter of the negative stigma of .info rather than Google keeping them down. The .info domain tends to have a spammy feel to it and, by that, I mean that a lot of the .info sites you see really aren't that good. So, people may be turned off by a .info domain and not link to it as readily as they may link to a .com domain.

Of course, the bottom line is that, as you've said, the .com should always be the first choice when available.

Anymore, I prefer not even to use a .org or .net either. Regardless of SERPs, people will gravitate to the .com. They might remember your domain name, but think .com rather than whatever extension yours is. So, they'll end up at another site rather than yours.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

That's probably true - I've never really tested .info domains for myself.

My experience with using some .com and some .info domains for the Xmas selling season was that overall, .infos did not get as much search traffic as .coms. I'd go for .coms every time next time.

For awhile at least I had the impression that .org domains
got favorable ranking easier than some others.

I would say go for .COM because that is what people "default"
to in their brains. If you tell people over the phone, if you
hand out business cards and so on... well if you are a
"business" and not a charity people may hear ".net" or
".info" but when they go to remember they will look for ".com"
    much of the time.

How much business are you willing to lose to lazy brains?

Thanks for all the feedback gang. I was leaning towards the .COM anyway but this group has helped justify my thoughts

The above comments about people defaulting to the .COM is right on the money. Don't try to paddle up that river.

Also, the biggest problem with .INFO is that the early users of these domains placed spammy junk all over the internet with them. I would avoid any .INFO for a site you want to monetize.

Personally, I won't buy one for my own projects.

that actually now has sparked another question I had about using dashes

I've heard both that its good and not good.

    Example

If I want to buy a domain for the following keyword

how to ride a horse bareback

do the search engines treat the following domains the same in terms of SERPS?

    howtorideahorsebareback.com
    how-to-ride-a-horse-bare-back.com

    Thanks all

Well i will be an example if .info domain makes a difference.

I have a one 4 days old blog that is already ranking number one for a few long tailed keywords. So I don't really think it matters.

Once your webpages are optimized for the right keywords and getting a lot of backlinks.

        just my 2 cents.

Go with dot com. I researched this topic after (unfortunately) I bought my .info cuz the .com was already taken. Google has no love for dot info.

Think I can answer this, goto Google type in - make money online, Site number 8 on the first page is a .info site. It's been on the first page of google.co.uk for 6 months!
