What do you use to make ebooks?

Right now i'm using a free app called doPDF, it converts a word document to a pdf in its exact form...pages in all, so isn't very good. Can anyone recommend some free pdf makers? Thanks.

if you are using XP, you can download a free "PDF converter" plugin for words.

If you are on Mac, you can just use it "convert to pdf function"

If all this fails, try downloading open office

    Hi cashtree,

My version of MS Word has the ability to save documents as a PDF. It keeps everything intact, and looks nice.

You can also download OpenOffice for free and do File > Export as PDF. That was what I used to use all the time and it worked like a charm.

I have never used any 3rd party solution for converting documents to PDF, but Word and OpenOffice work great.

    All the best,
    Michael

I am using Adobe Acrobat X. Might be an overkill for ebooks but I really like it. Education version are also much less expensive.

The best free PDF converter in my opinion is OpenOffice.org. Their suite of office products is free and you can easily convert documents to PDF.

      It's Easy & Free

I have used PrimoPDF and Open Office and have had good luck with both of them. I need to make a 3D cover for a book I just completed, my first eBook, by the way. I'm trying to 3D boxmaker, does anyone have a better suggestion without having to hire someone to create a cover for me.

I've used Open Office as well as Adobe itself to convert Word files to PDF ebooks. What does matter though too is what your MS Word or Open Office template looks like - if it looks plain or crappy then rendering it as a PDF is not going to look any better.

You can either use Word or OpenOffice templates that have been customized for e-books or learn the in's and out's of these editors in terms of margins, header/footer, front-matter, table of contents, lines, page numbering, chapter formatting, etc... yourself.

How you layout your ebook is important too.

I can't stand Open Office, personally. I just save it in word. The plugin to save word docs as a PDF file takes 2 minutes to download and install.

I think many would agree that eBook Cover Creator - eCover Design Online Free | MyEcoverMaker.com is a great ecover design tool.

As for just writing out the ebooks, I usually write them out on Notepad first and then transfer them over to OpenOffice in order to add that special "ebook" feeling to them.

I've also been known to write the ebooks inside of WordPress as I like my editor more and I can really visualize everything that's going on.

I too make use of open office but I also use Google Docs quite a but which has the download as option. In addition, I have found templates that I use with Open Office that spruce the book up quite a bit. If you want more info on this PM me as I don't want to promote a particular site here.

    God bless,

I use "open office" (a free program) to create my document and in the same program is an "export as PDF" which turns my document into a PDF ebook.

    OpenOffice has been discontinued.

Oracle gives up on OpenOffice after community forks the project

You want to switch to LibreOffice, which is based on the OpenOffice code.

    Home » LibreOffice

I am still not a fan of LO because I am a Microsoft fanboy and prefer Office365.

From what I can tell OpenOffice will still be available for a long time to come. This news was released 5 months ago, and seems to only apply to the commercial version of OpenOffice.

It will still be community supported. It will still be free. It will still be downloadable.

      No nee to panic.

      All the best,
      Michael

p.s. That's only based on my understanding of the article. At the very least, you can still download OO from www.openoffice.org as of this writing.

However, it is not the same community that supported OpenOffice six months ago. That community is now supporting LibreOffice. Don't confuse the name with the people.

Oh! I love this question! I have a free method for creating ebooks. Download OpenOffice. It is free, and works fantastic to create PDF's. Get some free images for your cover, or design one yourself.

Use the OpenOffice Writer to create the ebook.
    Write your content.
    Save as original format.
There is a tiny PDF icon in the toolbar at the top.
Click on that, and save your new PDF ebook.

Easy cheesy, as my son would say.

I currently use Microsoft Word from their Office suite it has a function to save the file as a PDF built in. But for those looking for "free" then Open Office is probably your best bet.

OpenOffice. I have used Word for 15 years, have loved it. HOWEVER, I find it clunky and lacking. I switched to OO a few days ago and love it.

Saves files to PDF, links and all. Its SO easy. Good luck!
