    There are some good ones.

But it all depends on HOW you want to make money.

There are Amazon affiliate site mentors, affiliate marketing mentors, product creation and launching mentors... etc

Once you figure out how you want to do it, then it's easier to pin down the right mentor for you.

It sometimes seems to me that they key question, Ben, is what sort of income-level you'd want your mentor to have, to be qualified to be "your mentor".

You'd want to be mentored by someone who is pretty well established and "where you'd like to be" in a few years, I think? So, what sort of income-level does a person like that command, and what's their hourly rate likely to be?

I'm not suggesting for a moment that there's anything wrong/misguided with what you're asking at all ... I just know from some earlier conversations on this subject that sometimes people imagine that a mentor whose own business produces a comfortable six-figure income is going to be working for about $30/$40 per hour, or will even agree to take a percentage of as-yet-unearned future money as payment.

The reality, of course predicates that it doesn't typically work that way at all.

Call me a skepchick, but it's perhaps wise to beware of "mentors" who seem to need you.

        You're a skepchick!

There are occasionally some very good mentoring courses available. I know one, which unfortunately closed on the 24th, which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, and it's run by someone who is earning a six figure income monthly.
However, there are also some so-called 'mentors' who will charge anything up to £5-6,000 for a short course, which is uyimately totally useless. I feel sorry for the newcomers caught in their traps.

Perhaps a better term might be "coaching'.
Some of the reasonably priced coaching courses are run by honest individuals who know their stuff. When asked why they do it, they genuinely admit that it's an additional income, on top of their other sources. You do almost invariably fork out a bit more to buy their other products, but at the end of the day, if you gain the knowledge, and you start building an online business quickly, it's worth the money, don't you think?
Better than spending months of your time and pots of money on useless or incomplete products which don't really get you anywhere.

Please change your photo. I can't make out which way is up. Or is that the idea?

        Cheers

        Alan

As in anything else worthwhile you need to research and read up on the folks that will be of help to you.

I've had coaching this year for about $1k and that is distinctly different from being mentored.

Coaching is more in the arena of being within a group environment learning general principles of a certain type of business model. You do get one-on-one attention but only [b]occasionally[B] from the coach.

Mentoring is personal. Something where the successful IMer can sit down and frequently talk with you and strategize, correct, and brain storm the right way you need to go as his/her Mentee. There is a lot more personal involvement with Mentorship.

Mentoring also tends to be much more expensive if you want someone with real experience and success. Check out Mentoring 2.0 | Ed Dale's Blog if you want to see.

HOWEVER, WF is full of successful marketing Warriors from which you can ask questions. You just have to find a few of these Warriors who have the same general business blueprint as you would like to pursue and ask them the questions you need.

But do not be over cumbersome and "hyper PM" just one Warrior all of your questions. Find at least a few well known successful Warriors so that you can spread out your questions.

Before asking though, don't forget to peruse (via the search bar, I like the Google one) the vast amounts of good information here. Be sure to turn on your "knowledge base" filter though. There is also much mis-information here as well. You alone have to figure out what's accurate and what's erroneous. Trial and error... that's life.

But if you're persistent and versatile, success will happen.

Personally I'm in the middle of it.

    Thanks,

    Gil

Sometimes one of the best ways to learn from a mentor is to get hold of their courses and then get to know how they write and how they think. Do this over and over and, over time, this 'third influence' (a term coined by Stephen Pierce) will rub off on you and you will start to adopt a bit of their voice in how you write. There's some good folks out there, you just need to pick one. People like Jason Fladlien, Robert Plank, Chris Farrell come to mind. You won't go wrong with any of these guys.

Well you can always do what I did and get paid to be mentored.

I was aggressive and landed a job in the office of a millionaire internet marketer before going on my own.

I worked real hard while I was in there and everything seemed to rub off on me.

I didn't make much money doing it, but after 3 months of it, I was a good enough marketer to do what I always wanted to do and be a full-time stay at home marketer. I knew the value all along was the knowledge and experience gained.

I would still be teaching guitar, painting houses, or doing construction if it weren't for that experience.

I think a good mentor will find you. When I first started out, I was in constant contact with Mike Hill (very bright man, with some great suggestions). Unfortunately due to major surgery, I was unable to keep working with him, but that's who got me started and gave me some direction.

I'd say reading posts and asking for advice is a good way to get someone to give you an honest hand. But when they start asking for money, I might run from that. Maybe it was just luck... but I reiterate, a good mentor finds you, not the other way around.

In general, you should get a mentor when you are making a little money doing something, and want to make more money doing the same thing.

Basically, a mentor is expensive, and you don't really have enough experience to know what kind you need. For the moment, save your money, read the forum, and get a good idea what kind of business you are trying to build.

You might say (and even think) that you don't care what kind of business it is, so long as it makes money, but you do. Once the first money shows up, and you're not desperate anymore, you will start looking around and going "hey, wait, this business sucks."

Now, imagine that you have spent $15k on a mentor to help you build that business. You're looking around thinking "this sucks." You don't want to be in this business anymore. But because you are attached to it - $15k worth of attached - you will stick with it and be miserable for a good long while past where you should have said "I want out of this business."

Hang around for a while, and you'll learn what appeals to you and what you're good at and what you'd be reasonably happy doing for the next several years. You'll also get to know some other people who are very good at those things, and some of them will have products and coaching programs. (Contrary to popular belief, most of those products and coaching programs will not be WSOs.) After you try out a couple products and maybe join a coaching program, you'll have a good idea what kind of mentor to seek out.

You will probably not take this advice, but it would be irresponsible not to give it to you.

Before you can find a mentor, you need to figure out exactly how you want to make money online. There are a number of paths you can take--not just one. For instance, you could start a product review site where you have reviews and related info. You could become a ghostwriter. You should start your own PLR store. Some people specialize in paid methods while others focus on starting out free and stuff. Beyond that, some people are better teachers than others.

I've found mentors can be more than just real live people, they can be books, information products, and other teachings.

While everyone else does mention that you should focus first, one thing you will probably need to do is find out more about different markets.

Find a need you can fill. Can you teach dogs to dance?

Awesome, I'm sure there are people who want that.

    Where can you bring value?

Where can you make someone's life easier?

Once you have those answers, as you create your business, mentors will just happen and appear before you most of the time.

Maybe you'll call them friends, or people in your mastermind, though your first mentor should be books and programs which teach you the important stuff.

I'd look up Eben Pagan, he has some great stuff which can really help you in your journey. Mostly self improvement, but he does have business courses as well.

You won't be able to see him live much anymore, he's moved and does virtual seminars now, but you can get a ton of knowledge from him.

Get on a number of successful IM'ers lists (you probably already are) and evaluate the ones that offer coaching over a period of time. Are they only sending offers ... or do they give good content? Do you find yourself learning as they teach? And are they leading in the area you want to specialize? When you get the right answers to those questions (and not before) sign up with one.

I'd rather see a persons performance than their sales page.

If you define exactly what you want to achieve, i.e. blogging, services, site flipping, affiliate marketing, offline, WSOs etc.

Once you've mapped out a biz model for your approach to IM, you should then draft up specific questions and you'll find someone on the WF to help you.

    Good luck!

Most people capable of being mentors hate being called mentors so if you're searching for the word "mentor" you probably won't find any real help. How many people have your contacted directly? Do you have any plans or are you just "up for anything"? How much money do you want to make? How much are you willing to pay to have someone stop what they are doing and talk to you? Free mentors are excellent value for money but a valuable mentor would never be free. Forget looking for a "mentor" because the useful ones cost thousands. Start a group or just talk with peers. That's your best bet.

I don't even know where to begin (and I know I'm going to get a ton of heat
for this post) but after reading your long run-on sentence I have to ask myself
      one question.

      Are you even trainable?

Sorry to have to say this, but some people have no business running a business.
They have ZERO communication skills, something that is critical to success,
especially if you're going to interact with the buying public. Sure, there are
some business models where that's not required, but most of the top ones
do require a decent command of the English language and being able to
      communicate with others.

Your post leads me to believe that you're seriously lacking in this area.

Second. What exactly are you looking for? Your post also hints that you're
looking for somebody to take you by the hand at little to no cost. Maybe
I'm reading into this but the tone of the post doesn't strike me as somebody
who understands that hiring a mentor is a commitment...in time and money.

My coaching program is very strict and quite honestly, I would turn you down
if you applied for it with the approach you just took at this forum.

It was as unprofessional as anything I've seen anywhere.

Imagine somebody walking into a recording studio looking for an internship
to learn engineering dressed in a torn shirt and torn jeans and saying to the
person hiring, "Hey, got any internships open?" while chewing on a wad of
gum and spitting on the floor.

Think you'll get hired? Think anybody would even bother training you?

Maybe you don't think it matters how you communicate on a forum.

Guess what? For many people, especially professionals, it does.

If my life depended on it, I wouldn't take you as a student.

As I said, I'm expecting to take a lot of heat for my comments, but be
honest with yourself and ask yourself if the way you approached this
thread was done in a professional manner?

As for the rest of the membership...fire away.

Lots of good points! Steven Wagenheim is dead on.

Some people have differentiated between the two, but I generally lump "mentoring" and "coaching" together. They're interchangeable.

You can use a person, a book, an information product, an internship or a job, -- or a forum -- as your mentor. People typically charge more for their personal time/attention than they will for an information product or a book. And one-on-one coaching typically costs A LOT more than group coaching.

My impression of you is nearly identical to Steven's. My guess is you have little/no money, no experience, or even any idea of what you want to do online. It sounds like you're looking for someone to take you by the hand and personally help you decide what's best for you to do online.

That probably isn't gonna happen (to put it nicely).

One of my mentors HIGHLY recommends investing most of your money in mentoring and then building the actual business and marketing on a shoestring. This is EXCELLENT advice.

However, if you're broke, you probably can't afford any group coaching program, much less one-on-one coaching.

That's ok. First, you need to research and "find" yourself online. That is, become knowledgeable enough that you KNOW what you want to do online. Do your homework. Search this forum. Read books. Buy courses.

Then apply what you've learned. It's ok if it doesn't work the first time. We all have to start somewhere. And believe me, you'll get a LOT more out of the coaching/mentoring if you 1) KNOW exactly what area of IM you want to pursue and what you want to get out of the coaching and 2) if you already have some experience under your belt.

Plus, it's less costly to invest in some IM products (comprehensive courses, not $5 ebooks), than hiring a mentor right out of the gate.

I'm very much a DIY kind of person and much preferred buying courses and studying on my own than buying actual coaching. I invested a lot of time and money over about 7 years (or more) learning, dabbling in IM, making some money, and deciding exactly what I wanted to do online. In that time, I also made a very short list of people I'd discovered who I trusted: people I buy from, listen to, trust and can recommend. (Having such a list of people will save you a LOT of time and headaches!)

Since I'm a DIY kind of person, I always viewed high-level, expensive coaching/mentoring programs a bit skeptically. I believe that mentoring from the right person is very valuable. But why should I pay $3,000 (or more) to be mentored when I can buy a course for $1,000 (or less) and teach myself the same thing????

So now I'm very knowledgeable about IM, with some experience to boot. So I was ready to jump into my first-ever coaching/mentoring opportunity when it dropped into my lap last year after I lost my job.

If I hadn't already done so much research or if I wasn't CRYSTAL CLEAR about what I wanted and expected out of it, I would never have done it. But she was the perfect mentor and the timing was perfect. (Incredible, really.) I'd NEVER invested so much money at once ($3,000), but it was worth it's weight in gold. And I was ready for it.

Make sure you're ready for mentoring! If you're a total newbie, chances are, you aren't. If you're even able to afford any type of mentoring as a newbie, you won't get as much out of it as you could otherwise if you know yourself better and what areas of IM you want to pursue.

It takes time to figure out what area of IM you want to pursue, who the players are in that area, and which one is right for you. Many people offer similar info, but not all people will resonate with your personally. You need to find someone you "click" with to get the most out of it.

I've been VERY happy with my mentor's guidance, THRILLED with what I learned and the world of possibilities she opened up, not to mention the emotional support she lent and her belief in all of her clients (me included).

I love her personality and have a huge respect for her personally, as well as professionally. She models my idea of what a woman in business should be: super business savvy, yet totally feminine. She is a lovely, lovely lady.

Once you know what area of IM you want to pursue, look to see who the players are in that field. Subscribe to their e-zines. Buy their courses and e-books. You'll quickly get a feel for those who are genuine.

Then find someone who's where you want to be, who has the RESULTS that you want to achieve, and hire them.

        WHEN you're ready for it.

        Hope that helps!

A good friend of mine who is a coach once said that many people are not prepared to pay the price for success. And he was not referring to his fees.

Good points Bill. As I posted earlier, the questions you raise are critical, yet too many people don't consider them. It's all about what can you do for me.

Whereas, if people addressed these questions before approaching others for help, they would go further.

On the face of it, people say they are looking for a mentor, but are in fact looking for someone to just tell them what to do... which is a different.

They have no plan to begin with. And if I you don't know what you want, how the hell am I supposed to know?

This is an extreme example, I think, but a very valid point: expect to pay good money for good coaching. "You get what you pay for" is never truer than in the area of mentoring/coaching.

There's no bargain-basement $5 coaching here. (And if there IS such coaching, be VERY skeptical.)

The mentors you REALLY want to learn from are the ones who do NOT offer mentoring. If you are serious about finding a great mentor then go and track down the person who is killing it in your area of interest and then go and pester them until they give in. That's how you will find a true mentor.

Oh, and by the way... YES! There ARE real, honest ones.

My mentors are truly the cream of the crop -- and they command big bucks. For those times when I'm broke and can't afford the coaching, they take pity on me and offer cheaper alternatives such as information products (e-books, courses, CDs, DVDs, etc.).

I'll even give you my list of mentors. This is my short list of people I've been buying from, listening to, and learning from for the last 7-8 years. And ALL of them are highly successful, with a lot of integrity, both personally and in the way they run their businesses.

I truly feel fortunate to learn from them and have such role models showing me what's possible for a woman in business.

    1. Ali Brown -- AliBrown.com (Ali was featured on ABC's Secret Millionaire.)
    2. Sheri McConnell -- SmartWomenInstitute.com (my mentor last year, a phenomenal lady!)
    3. Carrie Wilkerson -- Barefoot-Executive.com
    4. Joan Stewart -- PublicityHound.com
    5. Fabienne Fredrickson -- ClientAttraction.com

They are all phenomenally successful, at the top of their game. And I'm indebted to Ali Brown for introducing me (as her e-zine reader and customer) to so many more wonderdul people. It was after I first bought from her that things really started to come together for me.

    Hope that helps!

It would be an honor to know them.

One on one mentoring from an experienced professional isn't cheap.
I agree. You should see how much a personal coach in the stock market field costs - try $10k - $50k+ and they are teaching people to make just as much as what IMers want to make (enough to be free) so there really is no difference in the expected outcome.

In fact, there is far less risk in IM than in the stock market so in reality the IM coaches should be charging more than the stock market coaches because in IM you can make as much as you can in the SM but without as much risk and often passive which is even more desirable! Anyone who can take someone from broke to freedom should charge appropriately and accordingly. How much is freedom worth? $100,000? $300,000? That's how much people pay for businesses every day.

The question should be..."where are all the mentors that charge over $20,000?" - they are the ones you want to pursue because that's how much you want to make. Why? A rough calculation (taken from the real world) should be to pay the (effective!) coach per day what you want to make per month and that makes sense. Why? Because wouldn't you pay just one month of income to have the rest of them to yourself?

Freedom costs, time and/or money. You choose the mix.

I'll also add that "mentor" seems to be a very heavy word. Lots of pressure put on everyone in that deal, a mentor must deliver precise results and a those being 'mentored' must absorb the lessons and do exactly as they say or they are losers who don't follow through. All quite unnecessary when all you really want to do is move forward and get the job done as soon as possible. That can be achieved by paying someone to give help that will save you time wasted but you can also get just as good tips by hanging around with people who are doing the same thing.

Clubs work well and are fun for this reason. Forums are like clubs. So when people who seem to know what they are talking about tell you to "read through the forums" it's not just a flippant remark designed to make you feel lazy. It's a confirmation that you are in the right "club" right here, it's all here just ask.

So maybe we are looking at our mentors right now all around us by reading their posts and having a conversation about our little 'club' topic. Some extremely effective "coaches/mentors" charge per email reply(!) and here we are able to partake their wisdom for free. All they ask is that you ask publicly so others may learn as well. I think we are all mentoring each other all the time in here. My advice is to find someone to talk to who is struggling like you. For starters they are likely to be free and secondly there will be an exchange of ideas that might give you confirmation, an idea or a valuable connection.

It's not as important to have a massive goal as it is to do something today to advance along your journey. Sometimes talking to a peer (peer mentoring?) will take us just as far along that day as paying for people to help and if nothing else you will at least have better questions. I had some personal coaching the other day. It was 'expensive' (but so is a Rolls Royce...and there's a waiting list for those) and I talked most of the way through but the confirmation and tips I got were priceless and I got the information I wanted. Yep, it was one of us.

    Peers are great, try one.

How can a broke person pay $100,000?

      Hi bmmarketing,

I use my phone for alot of this, so if this is hard for you to read maybe you shouldnt be on this page.
Sidenote - Can the people calling for Tapatalk to be installed take note of this please?

People who use phones to post here blame their phones for the lack of quality in their communication - the point I have been trying to make.

To bmmarketing - perhaps it's not a mentor that you need. Perhaps it's your destiny that if you want 'it' badly enough, you will just have to get out there and teach yourself by learning the 'hard' way?

Not everyone has a mentor, but you've got to really want it, because it may not come easily. You have to want it with every bone/sinew/molecule in your body and it may take years and years. But it's better than the rat race, eh?

      Hope this helps.

Ok maybe this forum wasn't such a good idea after all, I'm no lazy man I'm working 6-7 day weeks 11+ hours. My punctuality maybe a little slack and maybe a few misspelled words, I try to make the most of my time and I use my phone for alot of this, so if this is hard for you to read maybe you shouldnt be on this page. I just wanted some advice not a lecture about what you think of me

Having a mentor is a huge help. A mentor knows the pitfalls that are hidden on the path to success and will guide you past them safely. They have tested the various marketing techniques and tools online and know which ones are critical and which ones are just hype.

As others have mentioned, one-on-one coaching from millionaires can be quite expensive. So you need to decide what is your budget for coaching.

A millionaire is not going to coach someone for $50 or $250 per hour. They are going to need much more than that because

I have put together an inexpensive group Internet mentorship program along with a free Internet marketing ecourse to help people from zero to their first $10k to $100K online.

If you start with this and build successfully, then you will some day be able to afford the high end coaches to help you get to the millionaire level.

    Hi Ben,

Go and register with the SuperFastResults forum.
It has several 6-figure marketers that offer coaching.

That is where I got mine.

Hardly you are going to find any mentors here for free. Instead, start reading a lot and then discuss it with other people here.

      BMMarketing,

Here's a video on having a mentor from one of MY mentors, Carrie Wilkerson:

barefootexecutive.tv » Blog Archive » Do you need a Mentor?

This is excellent advice! (And she said once that she does these bite-sized videos PRECISELY for those people who need help and guidance but can't afford the fees to hire someone directly.) It also gives you a good idea of her style. You can see a lot more of her videos at barefootexecutive.tv

As she says in the video, you can be mentored more than one way. You DON'T have to hire someone at a high price. You can watch an informative video, listen to a teleseminar, read an e-book or course, etc.

If you're looking for help with the basics, check out Carrie's Online Basics Made Simple course. (It's a bite-sized, bi-weekly lesson for just $10/month.) The information can be applied whether you're selling your own products or someone else's products as an affiliate.

      Hope that helps!
