Seems like the next big thing here for marketing is Twitter..

Anyone here making any money with this?

Share your thoughts..

Quite a few of us are making a killing on Twitter.

But I think you may be looking at it a bit backwards.

I don't think anyone I work with went into Twitter with the intention of it being a big money maker. Rather it was just a communication device and the income was a nice secondary surprise.

If your focus is... "How can I make money off Twitter" then you'll likely be grouped in with the other 95% of piss poor marketers who can't even yoke a grand a month out of it.

However, use it as a vehicle for communicating with people who really care about what you have to say and it can be gold.

There are two strategies that I know of that are currently bugging the crap out of me:

      1. Post a single spammy link as your only Tweet, and then go and follow as many people as you can and hope that they see it.
      2. Blindly follow as many people as you can hoping that they will follow you back. When they do, you only talk about yourself, your products, and your business.

If you want to use Twitter properly, seek out people that Tweet about things you are interested in or in areas you do business in. Slowly work your way into the market by using Twitter as a social tool and not a marketing tool.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a Tweet out of Moffatt...do I have the wrong account?

He has 2000+ tweets. Maybe you're following a spammer that used his name? Are there any underscores in the name?

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Yeah, I just found him and followed...think I had the wrong account - just gotta find it!

Quite a few people mispell my last name with only 1 "t" though. I don't update there.

I've mentioned this on another post recently, but I think the best explanation of how to use Twitter is by Perry Belcher on his blog:

Perry Belcher How To Make Money With Social Media

You'll see how Twitter and other social media sites fits into Perry's business model.

Love Perry's business model. He is very good at what he does.

I started out marketing my ghostwriting services there, and now I market my press release writing services on there.

I deliberately set out to follow a lot of people, and get a lot of people following me back. I know Jason and I are diametrically opposed on this strategy, but as I've pointed out to Jason - I'm no Jason Moffatt. By which I mean - aside from the fact that if I tried to surf I'd knock myself unconscious - Jason is a recognized name, so a bunch of people are going to follow him no matter what he does. I don't have that luxury.

What I do - short version - is I have my website set up, I put a bunch of posts on there that show my expertise in writing press releases (I was a newspaper reporter form 1991-2008), and then I tweet links to the useful posts on the site - in between tweets in which I just converse about what I'm doing.

Done right, this drives hundreds of visitors to my site in a 24 hour period when I do it, and some of those visitors buy my services.

I don't recommend using Twitter to sell affiliate products to people. I have only tweeted a sales link once, ever, and that was to Peter Drew's site, and actually it wasn't even an affiliate link - I was recommending his RSS stuff because it did wonders for a website of mine.
Dana, I think you've got Twitter monetization down perfectly. You insert it into your Tweetstream, but you don't blandly just promote, promote, promote. It is pretty obvious that you do it well or you wouldn't be able to hold on to so many followers.

That's why I left a little 5% wiggle room for folks such as yourself who have gone in and done well.

While we don't use it the same, I still think you've done a nice job!

ooooh, I'm in Jason's top 5 percent! Yeehah.

I do try to provide value when I'm on there. Even if it's just entertainment value sometimes.

Why thank you! People who blast out affiliate links get unfollowed and sometimes get their accounts suspended.

It's like any other type of networking - you have to have some social ability to do so.

I've very recently started taking Twitter seriously, and I've plans to try and generate passive income from it as I build 1000+ followers.

Its mostly for communicating and networking with other people that share same interests.

Well, first you have to consider that Twitter doesn't make a dime themselves right now. They're just hoping the Google, eBay or some other company with an addled management team trying to impress Wall Street institutional investors buys them for several million just on traffic potential alone.

From what I've seen so far with it, Twitter is great for what I call 'schmooze marketing' aka 'relationship marketing'. If you have a business model like Dana's where you need to connect and network with clients or if you market to the jaded 'make money online' or hip tech in-crowds then it's probably a decent way to schmooze your offers, build a list and so forth. If you primarily market to the not-so-with-it crowd, it's not too useful.

And to some who I've followed and then unfollowed, No, I do not need to know what your cat had for breakfast this morning or that you took a potty break at 10 AM.

Well, if Jay says so...going to cancel my Twitter account and find a real job...

Oh by the way, this is a hilariously bad example of marketing on Twitter - Twitter / dsc411dotcon

These morons keep following me under different Twitter names. This is about the sixth time they've followed me. Yes, I blocked them. They are some plastic surgery site in California offering a $3,000 boob job. Yep. Not only am I going to drop everything and fly to California to get some shady low budget company to enhance my rack, but I'm doing it because of a Twitter spammer account.

How many followers should you add per day ..On the safe side?
