Urgent Help

Hi warriors,

Im not sure if this is the right thread to post but Im in urgent need of help/support. Basically to cut a long story short I have decided to change hosts but before actually doing so I backed up my folders via Filezilla, however the real problem came with the database. I could not find for love nor money where to download my database, so in the attempt to accessing the database via my cpanel, I changed the username and password so that I could alter the credentials..BIG MISTAKE!

There was me thinking that by doing that I might be able to access the database for my website, subsequently now there is a database error and my site is no longer live. All i get is "Error establishing a database connection". I have not got a clue on what to do now, i hear things about wp-config and stuff, but to be perfectly honest with you I do not have an ounce of direction on where to go! Since then I have tried changing the username back to what i think i might have been with no luck.

So there we have it, ive made a rookie mistake. If anyone has any ideas or experience in this situation, I would highly appreciate any help that may be given.

    In your Cpanel go down to the Database area and find My PHP admin, this will give a listing of your databases and from here you can back up databases, using the export command. you can select as many of the databases as you wish but you may end up with large files.

    I suggest you start by selecting just one, export the data to your pc... then import it back again to see that it works.

    When you have a new host you will need to create a new database and import the data
    and yes you will need to do some changes to wp- config.

    all you need to back up your databases is to access phpMyAdmin and download them right from there

    I'm not sure what you've done now... lol, yeah... just change the username and pass back to what it was before and if you didn't do any other "newbie alterations" it should be fine.. and yeah, wp-config is where you specify your database credentials, so you can just enter your new username and pass there and it should work too

    Many hosts provide the not too user friendly utility: phpMyAdmin, here's something else.

    MySQL :: MySQL Administrator

    That can backup the database.


    Using FTP access or your host's file manager you might be able to edit the wp-config.php, if you can't fix it on the database side.

    Looks like you can change the database name and password there.

      The fact that I thanked and would appreciate help at the end of my post symbolizes some form of gratitude. And oddly enough I am grateful for the efficient and informative replies Ive received so please, if you have nothing to say that may help or relate to my thread, dont write anything at all.

      Nevertheless for those who have replied, I really really appreciate your assistance and giving me more clarity on what I need to do. Hopefully one day I can return the favor .
