Would You Pay $100 for This Domain?

29 replies
Just wondering if you would pay $100 for a domain with these credentials...

* Short (only 5 letters and forms an abbreviated word)

* Catchy (somewhat)

* Easy to remember

* Brandable

* Pronouncable (although it is an abbreviated word)

* Generic enough to use for just about any type of blog or site

* Already aged 2 years

* According to the Certified Offer Service from Network Solutions it's worth over $25,000

* According to swiftappraisal.com it's worth $2900 ~ $4400

* According to nameboy.com it's worth $10,571

I know it's not even close to being worth as much as those free appraisals say it is, but it still shows that it's definitely not a worthless domain.

Anyway, I've had a domain up for sale on Sitepoint for 7 days now with all the above things about it and a starting bid of only $100 (lowered from $200), and nobody has bid on it yet. I thought for sure it would easily sell.

I've never sold a domain without a site on it before so I don't know much about it, but it seems to me that a domain like this would be worth at least $100. I was expecting to get $200 or more with no problem.

What am I missing here?

    What's the pagerank or traffic to the site?

    If you can make sales on a site and show proof, then you can easily sell it for $100, but a website name alone will not sell for that much.

    You can go to here and download what was on the site, this may help to sell it without spending time on it: Internet Archive: Wayback Machine

    Hi Trent

    Re: "I've never sold a domain without a site on it before so I don't know much about it, but it seems to me that a domain like this would be worth at least $100. I was expecting to get $200 or more with no problem."

    Take this for what it's worth, but my first instinct with very short domain names is to wonder whether there might be trademark or other infringement hassles.

    A very short, five letter domain is almost guaranteed to be an acronym for something or other, or somewhere or other.

    If I were interested in this domain, I'd spend a lot of time researching it first...

    So this could be what's putting people off.

    Assuming that there's no problem there, it could also be because you're not selling the domain in the right place.

    Why not offer it for sale at one of the large domain registrars? If the domain is all it seems, you'd make a lot more than $100. :-)

    Cheers

    Angela

    If the domain name is not a keyword then it just has potential to be branded but any name has the potential to be branded.

    If the domain already has a site then it has the value of the work that went into it like design, content, current traffic, and backlinks.

    If I find an empty lot on a busy corner that is zoned for commercial use then it has a lot of potential but it will require a lot of work.

    And as you probably already know about folks coming on the Internet and business, they don't want to work for it.

    It sounds like it is valuable. It all depends on the niche also. I have sold websites and domains before and it all depends on the buyer. Someone may think it is worth $1 and someone else may think it is woth $2,000 or more. It really depends on the buyer. Everyone finds different value.

      Does it have any negative connotations?

      Is it offensive sounding in any way?

      Is it easy to pronounce, (consonant-verb-consonant) and remember the spelling?

      Or a trade name, but other than those I can't imagine why is hasn't at least been bid on.

      Are there any comments or questions on the sale?

      Many unusual 4 and 5 letter dom's are up for sale now, and most are parked or being used for directory farms.

    i just saw the listing. I would NOT buy it.

    reason: I don't like the letters in it. For me its just like any other 5 name domain, name is no real word either, so i dont see the value in it. I have seen better ones cheaper, some even 4 words just looking for expired domains elsewhere.

    Thats just my $0.02

    Edit: Its NOT *that* easy to remember, and not easy to "tell someone" either. Problem also getting it mixed up with the real word its coming from. The letter combination is also VERY odd in english.

    I'm I out of line asking him what the domain name is? Are we not allowed to mention a domain name if it comes up in a question like this?

    Thanks,

      Abbreviated Word - Short form of a word ex/example.... or co for company or inc for incorporation

      Now I'm going to have to find what domain he's talking about.

        Thanks for all the replies so far!

        And to answer some of your questions/comments...

        - No, the domain is not negative or offensive in any way.

        - It's not infringing on a trademark.

        - There is no site on it so no traffic or rankings. It did have a PR3 when I bought it about a year ago though.

        - The five letters are jurnl, which I think can be read as "journal" but maybe I am wrong.

        - It is a .com domain.

        - Yes, I know I could put a site on it and market it to drive up the price, but I was just sitting on it so I thought I could sell it to someone who wants it.

        Well, I think that's it for now. I guess I will just see if it sells and if not I will keep it and maybe develop it someday. Thanks again to everyone who has replied.

  • If you seriously believe that the domain can sell, put a blog on it, create a niche site, drive some traffic to it and then you can have some value add to present to a potential buyer. Maybe then they would be interested in taking it on, if not then hey... you spent like what $10 bucks on it?

    Without knowing the exact domain name, it's very hard to judge.
    Never trust online appraisals.
    It will be good that you post the domain name.

      5-letter domains are increasing in price,
      especially when it's brandable, easy to
      remember and NOT a mis-typed one.

      I just saw the domain fazza.com sold
      above USD 1000 recently.

      As for your domain: jurnl.com

      I think it's NOT a good domain.

      Why?

      1. It's a mis-typed version of journal.
      2. It has the letters r-n-l at the end... all consonants.

      Well, that's just my thought, but I've been
      selling domain names for a while also and
      I know a bit about domain value...

    Put that sexy domain name up on eBay stick a reserve on it. You did a great job of starting a description with your initial posts. I think you would be surprised how quickly it could sell. I feel Sitepoint is a great place to get real value for an already developed website but if you have a catchy domain name and mention nameboy etc like you did in your intial posts. What do you have to lose and could be worthwhile.

        Should get a nice price for it, only one way to tell is by putting it up.

        I think domain appraisals are almost one of those "black arts", a lot if statistics, but no real science behind it.

        Maybe just a tool to make people feel secure about loosing their money?

        It will just depend on what someone's willing to pay for it, and what your willing to let it go for.

        The domain name supply is very high right now, everyone's looking to cash out.

        Especially all those 3 and 4 character domains that were supposed to net a fortune by now.

    Thanks to the rest of you who replied too. I appreciate all the feedback. Like I said, I don't have experience with just selling domains so I am trying to get it figured out. I think I will stick to selling developed sites because the perceived value seems to be much higher for them even if the domain isn't very good.

      You can see a lot of evidence of this fact at those sites that auction sites off.

      I have seen a ton of sites that look good as far as the design and they have all of the Adsense, eBay, and Amazon affiliate bells and whistles but when you run the actual domain name itself it won't get any hits at all.

      Most of these were made the month they were being sold and have no link history or content juice so you are basically buying a site that is only good for branding and some of the domain names will be tough to sell.

    No I won't buy it because there is no meaning in the word. The meaningful word with few backlink is more useful than these type of domains.
