Can Google sue you for using one of their buttons?

Can Google sue you for using one of their buttons on my site? I mean if the site will grow and get big can problem arise? What about other sites, if I have used one of their things like the sidebars or something, I'm talking about big company sites not some small wordpress blogs. Please advise, thank you!

You are referring to the Google+ buttons, I assume.

Google wants the button out there...the more people see it, the more people go to Google+.

The more popular your site, the better it is for Google...so I see no reason for them to sue you, assuming no rules/terms of service were broken.

As long as you're using the buttons in a way Google wants you to, like the +1 Button, you'll be fine. But if you're using a Google button image for your own non-Google related purposes, you might want to be cautious. Might be safer just to create your own buttons?

Hi smolodoy, perhap you want to specify the actual buttons you're trying to use.

Basically, it should be okay except for logos etc. with copyrights/trademark thingy. Else a "common" button like Google+, Paypal or Google buy button should be fine.

I assume you are talking about having "borrowed" an image that is used in your sales process.

Google wants you to use any image that helps promote them, but they may not be so friendly about other images that they have paid to create.

For example, stock images are used by most everyone in Internet Marketing. Yet, if Google had purchased a stock image from one of the image companies, then Google should not be your concern, but rather the entity that owns the copyright of the image you are using.

If it is an image created internally by Google, Google may not enforce its legal rights on that image, as that is not their business model.

If it is an image you pulled from Google Images, those are images created by others.

And whether Google paid to create the image or someone else paid to create the image, you could get sued by the legal copyright holder of the image.

I could be wrong about dollar amounts, but I do believe the fine is up to $10,000 per infraction on each image used without permission.

So, the answer to your question is that Google may or may not enforce their legal copyright with you. But it is a very high-risk activity for any online business owner.

If the copyright is owned by an individual, they may not file on you either.

If the image originated from one of the stock image companies, then it is only a matter of time before you receive notice of copyright infringement.

But if it turns out that Getty Images is the owner of the image you are using, then nothing could protect you from the wrath of the Getty corporation!! Getty does not mess around. They will own your business when they are done.

    Well said, TPW.

I suppose you'll always just want to either create your own or buy some royalty-free stock graphics that you can edit to suit your needs.
