Hi,
I wonder how many of you have canceled your subscription with a paid membership site (usuallly through PayPal) yet still get to gain entry to the site due perhaps to a loophole in the site's script that failed to unsubscribe you. Because of this you're still able to download their products as though you're still a paying customer.

I used to belong to a membership site that I've canceled months ago but can still get access to and download whatever I like. Frankly, their products suck that's why I canceled my membership in the first place and I never bothered to download their products even if I can get away with it without paying a single cent. But once in a while, I'm tempted to cheat when I see an interesting product yet each time I do I feel guilty inside like I'm stealing or something. To sign up again with them is out of the question. So what would you do in this situation? Do you write them and inform them of the error or do you feel that it's not your fault and take whatever you can get away with?

What's your opinion?

Regards,
Henry

    Hi Henry,

I think you already know the answer to this.

Just because something is unprotected or easily exploited does not mean that it is free.
If you take something which you have not paid for then that is theft.

With regard to informing the product owner I believe the "Do unto others" rule should be easy to apply here. Contact them and tell them so they can correct their system.

I agree with the other posts... do what you know is right...

That being said, I do know some people that use a similar strategy to keep customers involved. All unsubscribers get an "accidental" mailing of the updated password. If you think about it, when someone unsubscribes and can still get access, they automatically think that they are getting one over on him, so naturally on occasion they go back to see if they can still get access. When they do, what do you think they see? the newest product or upgrade or whatever else he has going at the time, but their password doesn't give them access to it, but the paid subscribers have another password that works. Weather they buy or not, the point is he kept them involved. He has actually made a few sales using this strategy...

      Food for thought.

if the product didn't meet your expectation and you canceled the membership, why would you go back and download more stuff? :/

If something like that was happening on a membership site that i was running i would hope that someone would inform me of the loophole (if one existed). There are a good number of honest folks out there and they are the ones that you really want to be dealing with.

Loopholes such as this could happen because of an improperly coded script or because the site owner set the script up improperly, but neither matters as to what I would do.

I would inform the site owner of the issue in the hopes that it would get resolved. I know if the site were my own I would want someone to inform me of an issue that could allow access to non paying members and I would always report it if I found it.
