Selling My Service Here Without PayPal? What Do You Think?

I will like to lunch my web graphics designing service here on WF.

But i'm having a challenge of recieving payment for my service, as paypal happens to be the main payment solution here and they doesnt operate with my country.

My question is, can i still sell my service here using Alterpay and Liberty Reserve as a means of payment?

I appreciate your comment.

Yea I do t see why not, but only expect to get a fraction of the sales you would get with paypal.

You could definitely give it a shot.

As Jason mentioned, you should expect to lose a part of sales that you would've got with Paypal if you provide only these alternate payment options.

It might be worthwhile for you to check whether you could use other services like 2checkout which also allow you to accept paypal.

People tend to trust Paypal and plus there is a slight convenience factor by using it. Sales will be less unless people really want to buy.

Talking about payapl...i don't think it is wise receiving payment i cannot use nor withdraw.

I guess if people will be willing to order for a service using alertpay or libertyreserve

Using services like 2checkout (there are others too), you won't need to have a paypal account. You can let people buy via paypal and get paid by wire transfer or check..

I think you're going to find that a lot of people will not sign up for a liberty reserve or alertpay acct just to pay you. If that is not required (signing up), they might pay you via credit card if that's an option.

Won't 2checkout let you take PayPal payments without the need for the customer to sign up for a 2CO account?

I recently started using 2CO as my back-up payment handler. You definitely don't need to have an account in order to purchase from someone (who is using it as their payment handler), and as others have pointed out it also allows customers to pay via Paypal!

      PROS
      - probably a good option for those who are unable to get a Paypal account (although - not sure what sort of requirements 2CO has for letting people in as compared to Paypal)

      - great option in conjunction with Paypal since (as I've discovered) there are also a LOT of people who don't like Paypal or who just generally don't want to use them (obviously plenty of fans here on Warrior forum though) - so you can end up with more buyers (not applicable in your case since you can't get a PP account)

      - nice electronic money deposit option. Money is automatically wired to my bank account (no fees) on a regular basis (you get to decide on the payment threshold).

      - has some sort of built in affiliate program. I need to look into this one a bit more though.

      CONS
      - the user interface is VERY annoying in my humble opinion. I am used to Paypal, and was hoping for the same features. I find it very different (and not in a good way). Seems like you have to dig a bit to get specific info on each transaction (like fees you are paying etc)

-they keep a money "reserve" (small percentage of each sale) - and only pay it to you after 90 days or something like that. Guess it's to ensure against people taking off while owing them money? who knows

-it cost money to join. It was $50 way back when I originally signed up (years ago) - not sure what it is now. They also charge if you need to change the main domain for the account - and I have little doubt that they charge for a new account if you are using them for a completely different domain (they made it seem as though you could use one account for similar sites though - again, something I need to look into more thoroughly)

-the fees are higher than Paypal

-if you have to refund a purchase you get stuck with the fee! This one REALLY ticks me off - with paypal you can refund for something like 60 days and you get a full fee refund. With 2CO, once a payment is officially "deposited", they typically won't reimburse you for the fee if you need to refund.

-their "fraud check" process is really annoying. I've had a case of someone purchasing a virtual (online membership) product, being allowed access since 2CO gives the green light to my shopping cart software - then having the order not pass the fraud check. Thankfully this was simply an issue relating to the person's home address vs credit card address (or something along those lines) - not someone trying to rip me off - but it made me realize that it was something dishonest people could take advantage of.

      ----------------------

Based on my "CON" list it probably sounds like I hate 2CO (haha), but please keep in mind that a lot of my frustration stems from the fact that I'm a diehard Paypal fan/user and I'm just not used to the (2CO) system yet. I am starting to appreciate them more and more though!

      Hope this helps!

        Hi Bentley

Good list, thanks for posting it. We are moving to 2CO from PayPal right now and have spent some time talking with their representatives, tech support and risk management personnel. I'll have to say I'm impressed by the personal level of attention they have given us. Right now I'm coding to accept their INS (2CO's equivalent of the PayPal IPN).

I don't understand why that last point is in your "cons" list however, probably because I'm not fully grasping the situation. It almost sounds more like a "pro" - their risk management was investigating a potentially fraudulent charge. Or am I missing something?

Also, in this case did the payment finally go through? I'm in a similar situation to your customer, I'm currently in Canada but my billing address is in the US. Occasionally this has caused me problems, tried to order a computer from Tiger Direct earlier this year but couldn't because of the different billing and shipping addresses. Amazon and eBay have no issue with it though.

        Thanks

        Bill

Liberty Reserve will be an absolute non-starter for you, Paul. Almost nobody will be willing to pay that way.

AlertPay is possible, but your market will of course be limited to credit-card owners rather than PayPal account holders.

It'll be really helpful if you make it very clear to people that (i) you're taking AlertPay only because PayPal doesn't operate in your country (people will, otherwise, wonder why!), and (ii) that they don't have have to join AlertPay to pay, that way.

I'd also recommend 2CO, specifically because it offers PayPal as a payment option (as well as a few credit cards that PayPal does not accept).

Without an option to pay with PayPal you will lose a lot of potential business from the IM crowd. It's just a fact, despite all that we complain about PayPal when it comes to making payments it's the preferred method.

With PayPal as an option to pay you I could send you money directly from my PayPal account balance. That one fact alone will gain you customers - as most of my money starts out as PayPal revenue it's just easier. It's also easy because to pay you with a credit card I need to dig out my wallet and get the card information, with PayPal I just need to know my e-mail address and password. And I also know that if I need a refund it's simple, despite the fact that you are in a different country.

Like it or not, PayPal is the preferred method of payment in these parts. So if you can't use PayPal your best choice is a payment processor who accepts it for you. 2CO fits that description.

Ladies and gentle men, Thank you for your comments and recommendations

I'm thinking of going for 2co like some of you have recommended for me...

Customers hate constantly writing checks so here is one option for you. Have them write a check for $100 and give them 100 credits plus a bonus seven. That way they can try out the bonus seven on your penny. Also, do not have credits expire. OK many micro stocks like istockphoto did this and many people do not use them anymore. Credits should last forever, or at least many years. People hate having to constantly write you a check and that is why paypal is max pop.
