List building/email marketing issue. People only getting confirmation email, not subscribing

I'd noticed that the amount of emails that I'm getting confirming that someone has subscribed to my email list is much lower than the number listed as having signed up per day on my Aweber account.

So I went into my Aweber account and clicked on details about the people that had signed up. It turns out that only about 20% of them are shown as having received the first email. For that 20%, I get an email saying someone has signed up. For the other 80%, it says the confirmation message was the last message they got.

What's happening here? Do other people find that so many subscribers click to sign up and then don't accept the confirmation email?

I'm using a service called Listcrew which I thought was doing well for me, but it turns out is doing a lot worse than I thought.

I have the usual confirmation email message. Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks.

Ther could be many reasons for this. Most likely your confrmation email goes to their spam folder and they bulk delete it without even noticing. It could aslo be that spammers auto-subscribe to your mailing list without real intention to do so. Also possible, that if you use pop-over or exit splash kind of plugins, people may just enter their emails to get rid of the pop-up window.

These are my best guesses, but without doing thorough research, it's impossible to find out the true reason.

Send your subscribers to a thank you page after they initially sign up. On the thank you page remind them to go back to their email to confirm their subscription so that they may receive whatever it is you are providing to them.

Sounds like they are not getting your confirm mail.

I agree the thank you page redir immediately after sign-up is the way to go. Might even want to embed some audio or video there, telling people PRECISELY what to do.

The first question that comes to MY mind is "what reason do they have for confirming in the first place?"

What is the first page the visitor hits after they sign up?

I have heard that Yahoo are blocking Aweber messages at the moment.

Check to see if any of your sign-ups are from yahoo accounts.

Aweber are working on this with Yahoo.

Thanks for all the tips. Listcrew does use a pop-over type ad. But I would imagine most people would just hit the x and close it before signing up for the same effect.

I'll look into the thank you page, and make it as brainless as possible. Thank you!

I really should get on with list building, I'm making some money online affiliate marketing. Not starting this earlier is probably why it's not a living yet.

As for avoiding the spam folder, I suppose the text is quite important. I'll have to look up guides to avoiding the spam folder.

    Thanks!

You can always choose to go for single opt-in. Aweber allows this. The debate between single and double opt-in is one that has big proponents on both sides. But I like single opt-in to give subscribers instant gratification without making them go through too many hoops.
