Keyword in Domain name

Hi,

I was just wondering how it important it is to have your top keyword in you domain name? Does it really make a difference for optimisation purposes?

Thanks

In my opinion, it does help. It may not carry a lot of weight but SEO is all
about doing many different things that when combined has a noticeable
impact on the SERP's for your selected keyword(s).

    All the best,

I see a lot of domain names which rank high in the SEs without the keyword in their main domain. For example blog postings.

Including the keyword in the domain certainly helps SEO, but content matters more IMO. So I wouldn't bust a gut trying to get your domain to include a keyword if you can find a better sounding domain without it.

You might even find that a domain name that is more attractive to the surfer outclasses a clumsy one that includes the keyword.

I would like to agree here, too.

A local motor trader had a site built for him by me. His original site was on a domain that had nothing to do with his product.

I bought him a domain that identified his product and location in a 12 letter keyword that has a high search rate. The web site I built has no text, apart from the header, tos and contact pages but comes up around 3 - 5 in the search results on Google and 1 on MSN - the site was built only 4 weeks ago.

What surprised me was that the domain was actually available because the name was so obvious.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

I disagree, I have a domain name with the keyword in it and it ranks #1.

That is nothing but a un optomized redirected affiliate CPA page without the keyword on it anywhere. The only place with the keyword is in the domain itself.

A relevant keyword or keywords DEFINITELY helps in my experience.

Yes the keywords in domain name helps greatly. I have a site which is the exact same keyword phrase that gets searched almost 200000 times in a month. My site with that exact keyword in domain name ranks on first page on yahoo and third page on google.

And you know what- the site has zero content. Just a site title with that exact keyword and some crap text on the page. Yet it ranks high and get traffic. I will soon develop a complete site on that domain.

It helps for sure, especially for low to medium competitive terms it makes ranking alot easier. It's no substitute for links, but it gives you an advantage over any competitor with a site of similar strength.

I think what you can take from this is that if you can find a decent domain name with the keyword in it, then great, go for it.
If you can't, don't sweat it, just do the standard stuff that gets pages ranked for their keywords.

personally i've found it makes a big difference. does depend on the market ofcourse, for instance bbc is going to rank for all things to do with the news, not neccessarily the keyword though, where as a product will want their keyword in the url.

    hope it helps
