Longtail Keywords

Hi,

I know that this is a really basic question but can someone please explain to me what a "longtail keyword is"?

Are they something that I need to consider using in order to optimise my website?

    Long tail keywords is a phrase which is usually composed of more than 3 words. Yes they are used to optimize your site's ranking.

    Longtails are basically phrases. For instance: "Widgets" is not long tail, but "Green Widgets remove dust" is longtail. That is over the top. Take tattoos. A good long tail would be "best tattoo designs." A person searching that phrase is looking or designs, and is likely ready to buy into a membership site offering designs. Plus, there is a lot less competition.

    Should you think about using them for your site? YES. Use your main page to target your main keyword(s), but use your other pages/blog posts to target one long tail phrase at a time. That way you have pages SEO'd for those keywords you want to target.

    It's the difference between "dog training" and "training yorkie puppies products". The big deal about long tail keywords is 1) there's less competition for them, so it's easier to get a webpage to rank well in the SERPs, and especially 2) people who search certain long tail keywords are much father along toward making a decision to buy something.

    Long tail keywords are a great way to drive traffic. There are millions of long tail keywords which no one or very few are targeting and they can easily be conquered. Micro Niche Finder is a great tool to find such long tail keywords.

      Yep, that's the advantage. Ranking for long tail keywords means fewer, but highly targetted visitors and often less competition. The disadvantage is that due to fewer searches, long tail is kind of a mass business, you have to build loads of micro niche sites to get a good traffic volume. 10 visitors a day and 1 sale is great, but it's still only one sale...quality can only substitue volume to a certain extend.
