Idea for a forum, what platform?

Hi guys. I've an idea for a forum.

Can anyone recommend a good platform, free would be good, or not too expensive.

    There are quite few good free forum platforms, I would recommend you to check phpBB, SMF - Simple Machines and MyBB.

    But if you are looking for a paid platform check out vBulletin.

      I echo what amir said. There's no need to pay for forum software, those two he mentioned are the best out there and free, too.

        Vbulletin is the best there is. It's worth paying for it.

        You'll only find out flaws in the others when it's too late to revert.

          vbulletin is great and there are thousands of modifications with more being created daily - it's secure, stable and easy to administer. You'll have to pay for it but it's a worthwhile investment.

          Another excellent alternative is IPS - invisionpower.com
          Lots of vB users switched over to them when vB4 was released because of the new licensing system.

          vB has way more modifications therefor it's a lot easier to tweak without knowing php. IPS is coming along nicely, looks good but doesn't have the volume of users or mods. Either one is good and worth checking out.

            I've worked with SimpleMachines and it was reasonably good. As others have pointed out, VBulletin is awesome if you don't mind spending the $$.
            For WordPress users, SimplePress is pretty good (with a decent support forum), and I've heard that BBPress is quite good as well (but it works as a separate installation, not as a plugin, if I remember correctly).
            For my WordPress membership sites, SimplePress seems to integrate quite nicely.

    Did some research on free bulletin boards and finally decided on MyBB. Set it up but have not as of yet started using. It seemed to be the among the best of free ones

      Before adding a forum section to our website I did lot of research on different forum software and decided to go for vBulletin and I am really happy with the decision. It is really user friendly, does not require any coding skills, there a all the possible options in admin section, easy to manage, update and add thing, it looks good and performs really well. It has made it's cost back many times over by now.

    so far MYBB doing great as it has supported free google seo plugin for url modification , But Vbulletein is far more better but it is costly to gain the license for Vbulletein software with VBSEO plugin as well.
