Does anyone really understand the "Gravity" in CB??

I used to think that the Gravity listing in Clickbank was meaningful in that it helped you know which products were converting well. Is that still accurate? I seem to be seeing more and more products with horrible gravity that look like they get good sales, and some with great gravity scores that seem to be on the decline as far as conversions.

Does the gravity score mean anything anymore?? Do you look at it when selecting a product to promote?

Gravity is simply a weighted number of affiliates who have sold at least one product over the last 8 weeks, with the more recent sales counting for more than those made 8 weeks ago.

Gravity in CB can be thought of most succinctly as "What have you done for me lately?"

As thekaver said, it is dependent on sales by other affiliates, but what it measures is a bit more subtle.

In other words, it is a measure of popularity "right now" with a spread. As the time goes on, gravity may do a number of things:

1.) If it is a new launch from a well respected (or popular) guru type, it usually starts out high and gradually falls in value.

2.) If it is a new product from an unknown it usually has a very low value and stays that way, unless the new marketer starts doing some aggressive marketing.

3.) If a marketer does do aggressive marketing and the product is good, or goes viral, then gravity will go up.

Gravity always goes down eventually, but may persist for a time at some level if the product continues to sell as some sustained pace.

This is because it is time dependent and dynamic. So gravity is important if you want to sell a "hot product". If you have a specific niche, then it may not be that important. IF you have a niche, AND you are trying to find opportunities that others missed, you might even look for products with a low gravity because you are trying to find that "gem" no-one else has found.

CB's gravity algorithm is an attempt to rank these products based on how they are performing currently with an historic performance being slowly tapered off.

I hope all that makes sense - I have been studying these and other analytics with regard to the affiliate marketing arena for awhile - it is really an attempt to get a more accurate view of current popularity using the idea of "weightiness" or "gravitas" if you will.

The gravity rating on clickbank for each product is updated often. So it should be accurate.

    No.

Honestly, it's never been accurate, and it still isn't now.

There's absolutely no correlation between gravity and conversion-rates. That just isn't what gravity measures - nor does it purport to.

Yes, it actually means exactly what ClickBank explain it means. (The problem is that that isn't anything particularly useful).

There's a detailed explanation of "what gravity means", together with some "worked examples" and a little list of "key points" about gravity, in this post.

I do, yes ... but it's only one of 11 or 12 things I look at, and (with the exception of very high gravities, from which I really do run a mile - even in these shoes) it doesn't normally influence me too much, in itself.

      Hey,

If you want to make money online then you need solid marketing skills. It doesn't matter if you are selling a product on Clickbank or another vendor's stuff. You need to learn to pick a profitable niche, you need to learn to get targeted traffic that will convert and you need to learn to identify a good sales page that will sell.

Gravity will do none of those things.

Gravity is good for something. It is a good measure of SEO competition. The higher the number the harder it is going to be to sneak your way into a keyword that gets easy converting traffic without building a ton of backlinks.

Alexa - Ha! Thanks! You gotta run, even if it's in heels! Agreed! And seriously - thank you for the info. Very helpful and it does clarify things for me. You and David (as well as the other responders) have helped my finally understand the view to take with gravity scores.

I do, of course, also look at plenty of other factors and Yes, I'm focusing more on niche selection - but was confused as to how or why that gravity score was helpful.

And last, thank you for that link to the other Thread. Very helpful!

Yer it basically means how many different people are making
    money with that product.

Just be a little bit careful as it is manipulated. Getting to the
front page of Clickbank is like getting to the front page of Google.

I think Alexa is right on the money.

It does not tell you very much. It would be nice if CB could introduce a new ratings system which was a tad more meaningful and accessible for people deciding on products to promote.
