Twitter Theory ... will this work

Hey,

So, I'm now officially addicted thanks to Dana_W .

Joined twitter last night, followed what she said, and now have 121 followers, it is so much fun...

Now, I know you can't email your followers but you can Direct Message them.

So my theory or question is:

Technically are you allowed to DM all your followers?

I know you can do it so when i follow you I receive a message, but let's say I build up my following to 2,000 and then I come out with a product.

If I really wanted to, could I send a message to each one of the 2,000?

I haven't done it - but I believe there is a way to set up an automated message.

When someone follows you back, the automated DM goes out and says "thanks for the follow, please visit me at my site any time at http://yoursitedotcom" or what ever message you want to put in there.

So yes, you can dm everyone if you wanted to - but it's easier to just put updates on a regular basis in your timeline.

A regular Tweet is the best way to do that.

There are still a number of people that won't touch their DMs, especially if they have links, after the whole phishing scheme of a couple weeks ago.

And, lots of people, like me for example, pretty much ignore any DMs that look automated. The people sending DMs aren't looking for a response or interaction; they're just selling something or think they need to send you a welcome message or something.

And, "real" DMs may get lost amidst all the "thanks for following" greetings. I'm more likely to see a tweet directed at me than a DM.

I'd have to second that, I more commonly respond to tweets directed at me as opposed to DMs which can often get lost among the shuffle of automated "Welcome" tweets!

So welcome DM's, good or bad? Even when I know they are automated, I still like getting them. Others seem to disagree completely.

I don't like auto-welcome DMs any more than I like getting a form letter in the mail. I mean, I don't HATE them, but they don't impress me in any way. When someone sends a thanks DM and uses my name, I know it's a personalized DM and it makes a much bigger impression on me.

I agree...only problem is that recently it seems like I'm getting 10x more follows per day than normal. I don't know if that is because Twitter is getting more popular or because people actually care what I have to say...I'm guessing #1

They can automate that too. And I know that because a normal person wouldn't call me "Dan C."

People don't sit there tweeting all day. I haven't seen Dana on there for the past 4 hours; she's such a slacker these days. LOL!

It's just something you need to figure out how to fit into your marketing/promotions strategy. You might as well say, who has time to advertise, write newsletters, blog, etc.

Well, I don't know a whole lot about it (but will be reading Dana's book soon), but it doesn't sound like people sit there tweeting all day. It sounds like a great way to network with folks.

Don't worry, I don't get it either. I understand what Dana and Steve and some others are doing so far as building business relationships goes. But I've followed some people that are of the "twitter everything they do" variety as in....

"I gave my dog a can of Alpo for breakfast"

"My dog threw up, I'm cleaning it up"

"Ate my breakfast and then got a shower. I'm back now."

"Listened to Britney Spears on my iPod"

And this was from someone who has a 'make money online' blog and talks about using Twitter to drive traffic to their blog so that they get more readers. My response, who the F__ cares? I don't need your life twittered to me, I have my own. Some people have a serious case of twitarrhea.

    Hey,

    Makes sense.

As for people sitting on twitter all day?

I'm brand new at twitter, and basically what I did is just reported on
every task that I had on my to do list.

    Like:

    Drank my coffee

    Was late to work

    Started content creation

    etc, etc

So after I finished my task I just wrote it down on twitter...

    Then...

Sometimes a random person that your following or their following you will respond with a statement about your statement like:

Was it good? @ the coffee statement
I was late too @ the late comment

and basically that is how i see it operates.

Personally I think it is really cool after one day of using it, everytime you come to your page you see more activity and you also learn things...

    For example,

I learned today that you should never pitch your product on a first initial cold call

because someone said it in less then 140 characters.

It is almost like if everyone simply took their chapters in their ebooks and minimized it into 140 characters.

In any case, I enjoy it and it will definitely grow my business to higher profits!

Howdy! How is Twitter working out for you?

Re: the OP - the thing with Twitter is that it's not the same as an email list - people go on there to interact with others. So blasting out an auto-DM to everyone who is following you is not going to get the same reaction that it would get if you did that with your email list.

I've met some great people due to Twitter - even had dinner with Mark Joyner due to Twitter, so I can't knock it - but I don't like people pitching stuff and if they DM'd me a pitch I'd unfollow them immediately.

But I'm weird so others will probably behave differently

You'll have to forgive the quality as it was a handycam thing I bought at an airport and as it turned out wasn't great with moving video

But I put a nice fancy graphic on it to make up for it

    Hi Dana,
Twitter is working out well for me. I've had several sales already and I'm not even growing my followers as fast as I would like. I've got so many things going on at the same time (that's why I'm the PassiveCashGal! LOL) that it's hard for me to take the time to add so fast. I can't believe that you are up to 7,000+ already! You GO girl!

The cool thing is that I'm listed on Ecademy (professional networking site) as #6 with the highest number of Twitter followers! Those people don't have Twitter Goldrush though so I'm off to be #1!!! I love a challenge!

I was going to ask you about your next smack talk radio!! Now I see your link.. I'm gonna check the next scheduled one..I presume you are still smacking Sean around?? Ha! Ha!

If you send out 2000 DMs in a short period of time you're likely to get yourself banned by the Twitcops. And a bunch of @ msgs will have your followers dropping like flies since everyone gets your replies.
