Is this the end of the .COM domains?

Hi there fellow warriors, here's an article I've read something about the new generation for TLD company domains.

BBC News - Dot brand versus dot com: Internet domains go head to head

What if you are new to domains and you were a bit late to the game when it came to the internet.

And when you finally decided to go online, bloggsbogs.com was already taken. You're pretty sure this must be the reason you haven't made quite the splash you wanted in other towns.

Is there another way?

Domain dominion

Beginning in January 2012, applications open for a new class of gTLD (generic top level domain).

The people who control the use of internet domains, Icann (Internet Committee for Assigned Names and Numbers), announced in June they were extending the suffixes used for web addresses beyond the existing 22 (.com, .net, .uk, etc).

Interested parties can apply to run one, and either retain it for themselves, or set up as a registrar selling domains within groups like .car or .bank.

The suffixes don't have to be roman letters, so could for example be Chinese characters.

Some rules do apply - for instance, they must have at least three letters (Icann is holding onto the remaining two letter domains in case new countries are created).

So now companies can bid for their own gTLD for the first time. Think .hitachi, .coke, .facebook.

Could .com's dominance be coming to an end?

Time limited

If your dream of registering .bloggsbogs is going to become reality, you'd better get your skates on. The application period opens on 12 January 2012, and closes three months later on 12 April.

Miss this and you may be twiddling your thumbs till 2015 according to Tim Callan, chief marketing officer at domain experts Melbourne IT DBS.

My $185k will be invested into development of killer products. I'll let the large corporations shell out their $185k to score their own tlds.

End of prominence of the .com? At $185K? only 1500 are expected to jump... vs the millions and millions of .com owners.

I don't really see the relevance... and for a while I bet even those attempting to brand their .brand tlds will have confused people.

After a decade when you say "go to google" or "facebook" its pretty ingrained that people know to add a .com on the end without having to be told or recall... its automatic.

the .brand will just appear like branded subdomains minus the .com on the end.

Sure it could become big once someone brands their TLD for a specific type of activity... but I don't see it impacting .com at all... especially since on one is going to be saying go to Dot Brand they will say go to Site Dot Brand and people can still say "go to google" and everyone just knows that means .com.

I think the .brand is overpriced. You can get similar value out of subdomains and if you don't already own the .com or have legal claim to the trademark there is little point in competing with it by registering a .brand that you do not have the .com for.

I am sure someone can make sense of this for me... but $185k?

This. People are extremely used to typing "theirsearch.com" into their browsers and the smarter ones type "thiersearch" into google. As more and more people use google instead of blinding searching the internet, the domain extension of your site matters less and less.

I've had just as much success with .org and .net as I have with .com.

I'll let everyone else spend a ton of money on them while I stick to .com, .net, .org, .info and .co

Thanks for your opinions, yep... you're right, this really make sense. Me too, I would rather stick to the .com domains than investing in this brand domains.

      Then I would say " BRING IT ON ! ! !"

Honestly I think it'll be big in few years once it gains some popularity, but at the moment not a lot of people will be interested in it due to price.

Although .net been there for a while, i still prefer dot com. people get used to it for a long time now.

The proof that google itself use dot com to re-direct you. if you live in india and google in india google.com.in , when you visit india and type google.com , by default you will be directed to google.com.in.

Google do that because it became a habit to type .com like it if it is the default setting of our mind to type a website.

Yes, regoinal domains had its success because it is regional, but really why would i get a domain name xxx.music ? and will people pay attention to the domain ? or will i do the seo work and give my competitor for free.

This is a dumb idea. If I had $185K, I would keep it. But I don't, so I don't care.

    Hmmm... $10 versus $185k?

I think the choice is easy. Even if I had $185k I wouldn't buy a freaking tld extension with it.

I might go to Vegas though... lol

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Yeah, there's a lot better things to do with $185K.

Nevertheless, I was always resistant to the newer extensions, but over time they've still caught on.

The .brands will catch on too. Then we can draft the winners.
