Best method for delivering "Special Reports"

I'm wondering about the pros/cons concerning how a special report is delivered to an email sign-up. I've seen basically two methods:

a) sign-up and special report is delivered via email
b) sign-up and get "instant access" to a page with the link and a follow-on email.
c) ???

As an impatient person I see the benefit of instant access but wonder if it affects the unsubcribe rate

    If your list is double opt in it might be in your best interest to deliver it by email. Otherwise, they might just snatch the freebie and run.

      A lot of people say it's better NOT to force your visitors to join your list in order to get the freebie, but I personally disagree - just because someone might not be interested in my list now doesn't mean they won't buy a product later. Sure, a list where EVERYONE opted in optionally is very valuable, but IMO any double opt in address is gold

        +1 They are already visiting and leaving with only a tick in the GA hit column. Why would I let them leave with only a tick and with something of value. I'm tired of watching the traffic go by...

    May favorite is:

    Single Opt in > Instant Redirect to low cost OTO > Free Report Thank You Page (or a thank you page with the Free report and OTO download if they bought the OTO)

    Also, right after opt in a thank you email is sent with a link back to the download page.

    Add a followup series/sales funnel and perpetual launch to the mix and you've got a nice little income earner granted your product is good and your offer converts.
