Let's say you offered $1 million dollars to 500 random facebook fans....

Ok a penny to 500 random fans... lol.

If you have 20,000 fans, how would you randomly select 500 fans? I've seen people doing contests like this and I'm wondering if there is an automated way to select fans as winners.

This would most probably require some programming skills.

There's Facebook Query Language (FQL) - Facebook Developers

What I had in mind for this would be to export all your
friends on a text file and then feed them to a desktop
program that randomizes the list and picks out how many
you want from the list.
