Will Amazon allow California Affiliates soon?

As I read the news it appears California and Amazon have worked out a deal. Does this mean Amazon will likely allow affiliates from California again soon?

  • If they have worked out a deal, why wouldn't they? They had them before.

Your question doesn't make much sense.

If Amazon worked out a deal, I'd think they'd be eager to bring their California affiliates back on board.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I've been using Viglink and that works pretty good, but would love to go straight through amazon for some things.

I just got off Chat with Amazon and they could not help me with the question since it is handled by the Associates team so they put in a request on my behalf to answer the questions 24/48 response time.

Since I did not want to wait they also gave me this number call at: 800-372-8066 which is the Associates team and is available Mon thru Fri

I'm in Thailand so it wont work for me but one of you US guys could give it a try on Monday and see what the score is.

When i receive a email response I will post it here

I've also heard rumors about this from some tech blogs that CA affiliates will be re-instated very soon. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

I know that they are in discussions and trying to do something - just need to keep your fingers crossed.

I think they will get Cali back on board though.

I sent an inquiry to Amazon regarding when California affiliates could be reinstated and this was the response: "As you have heard, California Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation repealing the law that had forced us to terminate our California Associates.

We're working to relaunch the Amazon.com Associates Program in California as soon as possible. In the next few days, we'll reach out to all affected past Amazon.com Associates with information on how to re-open their accounts.

We look forward to seeing you again soon."

I received this letter over a week ago so hopefully they will speed up the process.

I dont get what's going on. I live in CA and got approved for my Amazon Affiliates account a few days ago. Were people in CA banned or something?

      • What most people fail to realize here is that California associates only have a one year reprieve. California will start collecting sales tax on purchases made by California residents starting in September 2012. That's September 1, 2012. We've lost one month already.

The clock is ticking...but we still don't have our accounts back.

A suspicion is dawning that Amazon didn't cut this deal for us.

I don't see it as a one-year reprieve. Amazon has said they will collect tax from California sales and will build distribution centers in the state. Looks like affiliates will be safe long term.

I'm wondering what Amazon is waiting for also. I received the form letter from Amazon on Sept 25. This letter was in response to my question about when California affiliates could expect to be reinstated. It said that we'd all be receiving instructions about reinstating in the next few days. Apparently they have their own definition for "next few days".

There is no doubt that Amazon treats its affiliates badly. I like Amazon because I make money using their site but I'll never hold any loyalty for them. However I'm sure all of the companies with online affiliates are totally capable of the same actions as Amazon.

I do have to say that it's confusing how Amazon treats affiliates who are making them money. It had to cost them plenty to cut off affiliates in California and other states. Oh well, hopefully the reinstatement letter will come out soon.

Finally, I got an email from Amazon today:

"We are pleased to invite all California Associates whose accounts were closed due to the prior legislation to re-enroll in the Associates Program.

If you haven’t already re-enrolled, please click here:"

WOW.. now, I continue making money with my affiliates!
